Summer Camp Counselor
Summer Camp Counselors play a key role in delivering a fun, safe, and memorable camp experience for all participants. This primarily outdoor position involves working closely with children, families, and program partners. Counselors plan, organize, and lead daily activities, supervise campers and junior staff, and create a positive, inclusive environment.
Counselors also get to be part of the fun—leading games and creative activities, accompanying campers on field trips, and spending time at the pool during scheduled swim days. Throughout all activities, counselors ensure that camp policies and safety procedures are consistently followed while helping campers build friendships and lasting memories.
- Monday through Friday, mornings and afternoons, June-July, plus required prep time.
- Average hours vary, up to 40 hours per week.
Responsibilities:
- Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities, including, but not limited to:
- Crafts
- Nature activities
- Songs and games
- Swimming
- Field trips
- Supervise campers during on-site programming and off-site field trips, ensuring proper attendance, transitions, and safety procedures.
- Identify and respond appropriately to camper behavior issues, implementing behavior management strategies, and reporting concerns, as needed.
- Serve as a positive role model and maintain professional communication with campers, parents, staff, and activity partners.
- Assist with planning schedules, preparing materials, and completing required documentation.
- Supervise and mentor Junior Counselors and Counselors-in-Training (CITs).
- Follow all camp policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
Qualifications & Skills
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Current CPR and First Aid Certification. The City of Avon Lake Recreation Department can assist you with obtaining certification.
- Ability to successfully complete pre-season in-service training.
- Must pass a background check.
Physical & Work Requirements
- This position is primarily outdoors.
- Must have the physical ability to lead and actively participate in camp programming.
- Ability to stand, walk, run, swim, and engage in physical activities for extended periods.
- Ability to respond appropriately to emergency situations.
