Student Research Assistant in Astronomy - Summer 2026 - Work Study or Regular Pay

This position will be to assist Dr. Andrew Nine in a federally-funded research project studying the occurrence of planetary engulfment in exoplanetary systems through the analysis of publicly available astronomical data. Students will join a nationwide collaboration and work with standard astronomical data analysis tools. Students will contribute directly to the creation of original astronomical research for publication. Students will also have the opportunity to travel to the American Astronomical Society meeting in Salt Lake City, UT in January 2027.

Working hours are generally flexible, with regular check-in meetings to discuss research progress. No previous research experience is necessary.


Requirements:

  • Familiarity with Python preferred
  • Must be at least a junior in standing by Fall 2026
  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0
  • Must have taken at least one Math & Quantitative Reasoning (MQR) course with a grade of B or better
