Legal Assistant I – Private Client (Trusts & Estates)

Location: Hunt Valley, Maryland

Schedule: Full-Time

This is an in-office position. Limited remote work is available as needed with greater flexibility over time. 

 

The Opportunity

Herman LLC is seeking a Legal Assistant I to join our team. This early-career role is designed for recent graduates and professionals with 0-3 years of experience who are interested in working in a professional legal environment and developing strong administrative and organizational skills. The position offers hands-on exposure to the sophisticated trust and estate matters typically handled in large-firm private client groups, within a collaborative boutique environment. Legal Assistants are an integral part of our team and play an important role in helping the firm meet the needs and goals of our clients. In this role, you will work closely with attorneys and paralegals while supporting the administration of sophisticated trust and estate matters.

Some Legal Assistants choose to build long-term careers in this role, while others may pursue advancement into the paralegal track over time based on performance and interest. This position is particularly well suited for individuals who:

  • Are interested in building long-term expertise in trusts and estates, or
  • Are considering law school and want rigorous, resume-defining experience

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide administrative and organizational support across estate and trust administration matters
  • Track matter deadlines and assist in coordinating key filings and project timelines
  • Assist with drafting, proofreading, and formatting estate planning and administration documents
  • Maintain electronic and physical client files with accuracy and organization
  • Compile asset lists and financial information from banks, custodians, and other institutions
  • Assist with maintaining charts, timelines, and other internal matter summaries
  • Support attorneys and paralegals in preparing materials for tax filings, including Federal Estate Tax Returns (Form 706), Federal Gift Tax Returns (Form 709), Federal Estate & Trust Income Tax Returns (Form 1041), and related Maryland filings
  • Coordinate scheduling and assist with managing calendars and appointments
  • Prepare meeting notes and assist in tracking follow-up tasks
  • Answer phones and communicate professionally with clients and other professionals
  • Assist with the preparation of presentations, charts, and visual materials
  • Support the organization and maintenance of electronic document systems

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Strong academic record
  • High-level computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office (especially Word and Excel)
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks effectively
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; comfortable interacting with clients and professionals across organizations and at all levels
  • Team player with a positive attitude and strong work ethic
  • Proven ability to work independently while collaborating within a team environment
  • Highest degree of integrity, professionalism, diplomacy, and discretion, including the ability to safeguard highly confidential and sensitive information

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, including the use of formulas and pivot tables in Excel
  • Excellent knowledge of word processing, particularly proofreading and formatting
  • Comfort or familiarity in dealing with financial and economic concepts
  • Experience working with numerical data
