Position Description For:

Student Custodian Housing Summer 2026

Start Date: Tuesday, May 5th

End Date: Friday, August 21st

Working Hours: Monday-Friday 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Issued: March 18, 2026   

Wage: $14.50/ hour

Function and Responsibility:

To assist with the cleaning, maintenance and preparation of Housings facilities for summer guests and for students arriving in the fall semester.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Know and follow departmental expectations regarding student employees, standards for general cleanliness and maintenance, security, and energy conservation.

2. Clean assigned areas using various cleaning and maintenance equipment: window and wall washing, operate floor scrubbers, carpet extractors, hard floor stripping and waxing. 

3. Dismantle and move furniture: couches, upholstered chairs, dressers, desks, beds & mattresses. Assist with lofting/ un-lofting of beds.

4. Painting within residence halls, apartments and public areas.

5. Maintain grounds adjacent to residence halls or apartments 

6. Survey assigned areas both inside and outside of buildings to assess maintenance and cleanliness status and initiate follow-up activities as assigned.

7. Assist with the completion of minor repairs as directed using small hand tools 

8. Assist with keeping inventory of supplies, parts and equipment and report when quantities are low.

9. Report safety problems, accidents, injuries, damages, as well as infractions of rules and policies promptly.

10. Ability to communicate with supervisor and co-workers and work within a team environment. 

11. Effective time management skills including reporting to work on time. 

12. Report emergencies within facilities, problems and potential problems to the supervisor.

13. Prepare reports as directed. Mark up task lists as work items are completed. 

14. Follow all University safety standards including proper bending and lifting techniques. 

15. Perform other duties as assigned. 

We are flexible for release time to attend to summer classes.

Supervision Received: The student custodian is supervised by a full-time Building & Grounds staff member and Building Operations Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Must have a good work ethic. Physical capability to perform all the duties and responsibilities of the position.

2. Good social skills and positive attitude, the ability to be tactful and helpful to Housing staff, fellow students, residents and guests to the University.

3. Be in good academic standing and have a satisfactory student conduct record.

4. Ability to work side by side with other student employees and full time NMU employees.

5. Must be reliable and able to follow directions.

Additional Desirable Qualifications:

1. Previous custodial and/or maintenance experience.
