Waterfowl Population Assessor (Biological Science Assistant) REQ-196971

Hiring one seasonal position with anticipated duration of July 1, 2026 – October 31, 2026

As a Waterfowl Population Assessor (Biological Science Assistant) in Sauvie Island, Oregon, you will capture, identify, and band migratory game bird species, as well as monitor movements and record populations information for waterfowl species to monitor population status to support harvest management decisions. Duties include:

Capture migratory game birds using bait traps, nets and boats for the purpose of banding and monitoring for avian disease, including avian influenza

Maintain records in the field and office including submission of electronic banding files to the Wildlife Division

Record recapture information

Maintain capture equipment

Preventative and corrective maintenance of buildings, grounds and facilities

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Minimum qualifications are not established for this position; however, we are seeking applicants with the following experience or skills. Preference for interviews may be given to candidates with these skills and background:

Experience in wildlife capture and handling

Bird banding experience

Experience with waterfowl identification by age and sex

Experience with waterfowl trap construction and maintenance

Experience collecting, recording and entering data

Experience using hand tools and power equipment

Experience with habitat maintenance and improvement projects

Experience performing minor maintenance on equipment

Experience using hand-held GPS units

Anyone who has or is in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences

The salary listed is the non-PERS qualifying salary range. If the successful candidate is PERS qualifying, the salary range will reflect an additional 6.95%
