Building: Split Between Mason Middle School and High School / Mason Public Schools / In-Person
Reports to: Special Education Director

Job Summary: The Split Resource Room Teacher / Teacher Consultant provides specialized instructional support and consultation services to students with disabilities across both the middle school and high school settings. This position focuses on delivering targeted interventions, monitoring student progress, supporting students enrolled in virtual coursework, and collaborating with staff to promote student success in both academic and post-secondary transition planning.
Qualifications Required:
- Bachelors Degree
- Michigan Teaching Certificate – Secondary
- Certification in Special Education
- Three years of experience teaching special education
Qualifications Preferred:
- Masters Degree
Key Responsibilities:

Instructional Support & Intervention:
- Provide targeted academic and behavioral interventions in a resource room setting.
- Deliver individualized and small-group instruction aligned with student IEP goals.
- Monitor student progress through ongoing progress monitoring and adjust interventions as needed.
- Collect and analyze data to inform instructional decisions and evaluate student growth.

Consultation & Collaboration:
- Provide consultation and support to general education teachers to help implement accommodations, modifications, and instructional strategies that support student success.
- Work directly with students to build self-advocacy, organization, and learning strategies.
- Collaborate with school staff, administration, and families to support student needs.

Virtual Learning Support:
- Monitor and support students enrolled in virtual or online classes.
- Track student progress, engagement, and completion of coursework.
- Communicate with students, teachers, and families to address barriers and promote successful course completion.

Special Education Compliance:
- Develop, write, and maintain Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
- Collect and maintain required documentation and data related to student services and progress.
- Participate in IEP meetings and collaborate with team members to ensure compliance with special education regulations.

Transition Planning:
- Support students with transition planning for post-secondary education, employment, and independent living.
- Assist students in developing goals, skills, and plans for life after high school.
- Coordinate with staff and community resources to support successful transitions.
Job Description:
- Ability to analyze academic and behavioral data and adjust instruction based on trends and patterns
- Provide support to caseload teachers re: CPI processes/ responses and seclusion/restraint documentation
- Provide ongoing support for general education teachers (including curriculum adaptations, behavior management, goal setting, IEP objectives, etc.) utilizing evidence-based practices and strategies appropriate to support students with disabilities
- Direct student support
- Provide small group/1:1 instruction in executive functioning, regulation, and academics
- Model emotional regulation strategies (Zones, mindfulness, etc.)
- Teach study skills: time management, task initiation, goal setting
- Apply strategies across content areas and settings
- Track progress toward IEP goals
- Systems Development Create and refine proactive systems: check-in/check-out, strategy menus, visual supports
- Implement tiered supports within MTSS/PBIS
- Build tools to help students internalize routines
- Collaboration & consultation support to general education teachers with behavior strategies and accommodations
- Attend IEP meetings and offer data-informed input
- Collaborate with social workers, counselors, and staff
- Provide professional development and coaching as needed
- Compliance and documentation – maintain accurate records of services, accommodations, and progress
- Ensure all practices align with federal/state requirements
- Experience teaching emotionally impaired students
- Uses innovative teaching techniques to actively engage all students in the learning process
- Integration of technology into the classroom
- Knowledge and experience setting up and utilizing classroom behavior management systems
- Experience developing individualized behavior or academic plans for students with emotional impairments
- Possesses a caring, creative, energetic personality
- Demonstration of effective classroom management
- Work with general education teachers to modify curriculum or address behavior needs of students with disabilities in the general education classroom
- Experience conducting annual IEP’s and other caseload management duties
- Demonstrated experience collecting and charting behavior data
- Experience with Medicaid billing
- Ability to demonstrate proper use of crisis prevention intervention strategies
- Knowledge of appropriate documentation of isolation or restraint data
- Ability to effectively oversee and utilize paraprofessional staff
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- This position requires long periods of standing, sitting, and walking.
- The position requires occasional lifting of supplies and movement of classroom furnishings during the course of the school day.
- Work may take place both indoors and outdoors, with the possibility of some travel to other schools or field trip locations.
Work Year & Salary: Per the MDMEA bargaining unit agreement
