GENERAL NATURE OF POSITION
This position operates MLML’s analytical instrumentation and supports laboratory analysis for faculty, students, research affiliates, and external (non-SJSU) clients. The role assists with sample preparation, instrument operation, and data generation to support research and analytical services conducted by the laboratory.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operating analytical equipment.
- Chemical handling and disposal.
- Data analysis and reporting.
- Laboratory inventory and safety checks.
- Communicate results to clients.
INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS
- Reports to Petra Dekens, Executive Director at MLML.
- Work lead and direction for this position comes from Steve Cunningham, the Laboratory Technician.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related scientific field, or equivalent laboratory experience.
- Basic proficiency with spreadsheet software (Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel) and Windows operating systems.
- Demonstrated ability to follow written laboratory procedures and safety protocols.
Additional Requirements
- High attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Ability to troubleshoot analytical or procedural issues in a laboratory setting.
- Ability to follow detailed analytical procedures and laboratory protocols.
- Ability to accurately document laboratory work and maintain organized records.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Desired Accomplishments
- OSHA laboratory or chemical safety training.
- Familiarity with the Surface Water Ambient Monitoring Program (SWAMP).
- Experience with water sample collection, preservation, and chain-of-custody procedures.
- Experience with environmental sample analysis or analytical instrumentation.
Physical Demands
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds (e.g., sample coolers or equipment).
- Ability to stand or work at a laboratory bench for extended periods.
- Ability to handle chemicals and laboratory materials using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Manual dexterity required for laboratory tasks such as pipetting, sample preparation, and instrument operation.
