Government Affairs Intern - Summer 2026
Everytown for Gun Safety, the nation’s largest gun violence prevention organization, is seeking a Government Affairs Intern. The Government Affairs department works with federal, state, and local elected officials to advocate for and advance local, state and federal gun safety measures. The intern will support our efforts to engage elected officials across the country, and build out new programs of support.
The position will report to our Washington, D.C or New York City office. The internship will being late-May, and continue until mid-August; there is an expectation of completing at least 25-30 hours per week.
This is a paid internship. The rate will be a minimum of $18 p/hr.
What your role will look like on our team:
Legislative Shadowing - 25%
- Attend meetings with legislators and coalition partners.
- Monitor hearings and report back on the status of priority legislation.
- Attend regional and state internal meetings.
- Participate in strategic planning for future legislative sessions.
Media Monitoring, Bill Tracking and Legislative Reporting - 25%
- Maintain a record of gun violence related policies at the Federal, State, and Local levels of Government.
- Support the team in memorializing data around gun violence prevention bills.
- Compile statistics from Quorum about performance of high-priority state campaigns and legislation.
- Monitor news to identify innovative local efforts to reduce gun violence and opportunities for engagement with new local officials
Operational Support - 50%
- Support the Operations team with compiling expense reports to meet accounting and compliance deadlines.
- Organize team presence at priority conferences and internal and external events.
- Help plan and execute in-person department meetings.
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student pursuing studies in political science, public administration, public policy or a related field.
- Familiarity with or a strong desire to learn about gun safety advocacy and government relations
- Exceptional attention to detail
- A self-starter who is willing to take initiative on projects
- Ability to quickly learn and adapt to a fast-paced environment
- Excellent judgment and communication skills
- Experience and proficiency using Google Suite products like Google Sheets, Google Docs, and Google Calendar.
- Comfort working remotely with the ability to travel occasionally (all travel costs are covered by Everytown)
- While not required, an interest in gun violence issues is a plus.
