Engineering Internship or Co-op, Engineering and Public Works Department

Overview:

The Engineering and Public Works Department supervises the planning, design, and construction of a variety of public works and utility facilities in the City of Maryville, Tennessee.  In addition, the Engineering Department reviews subdivision, site, and construction plans and specifications for codes compliance, municipal standards, policies, and sound engineering principles.

This is a three-semester experience including one full-time semester (Summer) and two part-time semesters (Fall & Winter/Spring). Responsibilities:

The student engineer will work under the direct supervision of the City Engineer.  Primary responsibilities will include:

 

  • Street Maintenance – Assists with the inspection and inventory of street condition. Assists in development of pavement maintenance and inventory management strategies.
  • Traffic – Assists with traffic counts used for evaluation of traffic patterns and proposed intersection improvements.
  • Project Plan Development – Assist with design of smaller City of Maryville infrastructure projects.
  • Site Plan Review –  Assists with review of engineering design plans and drawings for conformance with City land development guidelines. 

Opportunities:

Engineering interns will be given opportunities to develop real-world engineering skills related to:

  • Traffic Engineering and Roadway Design
  • Site Design, Construction and Evaluation
  • Modern Public Works Procedures/Management
  • ArcGIS Mapping and AutoCad Design Software

Requirements:

Excellent written and oral communication skills are desirable.  Basic computer skills should include all Microsoft Office applications.  Knowledge of AutoCad, MicroStation, and/or GIS is a plus. Sophomore standing or above. GPA: 2.5 or above.

Physical Requirements: 

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work frequently sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, using of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather) and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather); work is generally in a quiet location (e.g. library, private offices).
