QGIS Specialist

Opportunity Overview

Handshake is recruiting GIS specialists with experience in geospatial analysis and mapping using QGIS to contribute to an AI research project. In this project, you’ll apply your expertise to help improve how AI understands real-world professional tasks within your domain, such as spatial analysis, cartography, geospatial data management, and remote sensing. This is an ongoing, project-based opportunity you can take on alongside your current role.

What You’ll Do

  • Use your GIS experience to create tasks that today’s top AI models can’t solve based on real workflows, such as vector and raster analysis, coordinate reference system handling and reprojection, geoprocessing and spatial joins, georeferencing, map layout and cartographic design, and automation with PyQGIS or the Processing toolbox
  • Review and evaluate AI-generated responses
  • Provide clear, structured written feedback to help improve AI model performance
  • Work remotely and complete tasks at your own pace, with no set schedule or minimum hour requirement

Qualifications

  • Degree: Completed Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field, such as Geography, Geographic Information Science, Environmental Science, Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Geology, or a closely related discipline
  • Tool experience: At least 2 years of work experience using QGIS or an equivalent tool

Additional qualifications (not required, but strengthen your application)

  • Experience across multiple geospatial tools and workflows, such as ArcGIS, PostGIS, GDAL/OGR, GRASS GIS, Google Earth Engine, or Python libraries for geospatial analysis (GeoPandas, Rasterio, Shapely)
  • Professional experience at an environmental consultancy, government agency, utility, urban planning or engineering firm, or research lab, or a portfolio of published maps or spatial analysis projects

Required for all applicants

  • Must have US work authorization
  • Strong written communication and attention to detail
  • Ability to explain complex geospatial concepts clearly
  • Ability to work independently in a remote, asynchronous environment
