Tentatively Reports to: Engineering Staff 

Classification: Temporary / Summer Intern 

Dates: 6/1/2026 – 8/21/2026 (Some Schedule Flexibility Available)

Salary: $18.75 per hour 

Hours: 40 hours per week

 

General Description: 

 

The Engineering Intern will assist engineering staff with field and office activities related to construction observation and stormwater infrastructure inspections. This position provides hands-on experience supporting municipal infrastructure projects, including storm sewer outfall inspections and construction monitoring.

 

Essential Functions:

Primary Responsibilities: 

 

  • Assist with data collection, organization, and entry related to Lead Service Line inventory and 
  • Assist engineering staff with construction observation activities on municipal infrastructure projects.
  • Participate in storm sewer outfall inspections and assist with documentation of field conditions.
  • Collect field data, photographs, measurements, and notes to support inspection reports.
  • Assist with preparation of construction observation reports and inspection documentation.
  • Help maintain organized project records and field documentation.
  • Assist with mapping or updating stormwater infrastructure information in GIS or asset management systems.
  • Participate in site visits and coordinate with engineering staff on inspection findings.
  • Provide general technical and administrative support to the Engineering Department as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Learning Opportunities:

Minimum Qualifications: 

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Education and Training: 

Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.

Experience: 

Completion of at least one (1) year of college coursework preferred.

License or Certifications: 

            Valid Driver’s License

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

 

  • Interest in municipal infrastructure, stormwater systems, or construction management.
  • Familiarity with GIS, surveying, or infrastructure inspection practices.

Knowledge and Abilities: 

 

  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word).
  • Ability to drive a city-owned vehicle.

Environment: 

Work is regularly performed outdoors in the field with some office work. 

 

Physical: 

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an outdoor setting. Ability to walk uneven terrain, stand for extended periods, work in varying weather conditions, and safely access construction sites while following safety protocols. The City of East Moline promotes a drug/alcohol free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment and random drug testing.
