Coach Portal is a sports technology platform built to help coaches navigate the job market, grow their professional networks, and advance their careers.

The platform serves coaches across football, basketball, baseball, and other sports at the professional, college, high school, and youth levels, providing a centralized database, networking infrastructure, and career tools designed specifically for the coaching profession.

Coach Portal was founded by former college football coach Kevin Abrams, who experienced firsthand how difficult it can be for talented coaches to access opportunities and build the relationships needed to advance in the profession.

Today, Coach Portal has thousands of members and growing, with strong traction particularly in football. The company is bootstrapped and entering its next stage of growth as it expands product capabilities, integrates AI-driven tools, and builds the technological foundation to scale into the leading career, networking, and professional development platform in sports.

We are now seeking a Chief Technology Officer to help lead this next phase.

 

The Opportunity

Coach Portal is looking for a technical builder and product-minded leader to take ownership of the platform’s technology and help shape the future of the company.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys building and scaling early-stage platforms, working closely with a founder, and developing technology that solves real problems for a passionate professional community.

The CTO will initially work hands-on in the codebase while also guiding the long-term technical architecture, product roadmap, and AI strategy of the platform.

For the right candidate, this role may evolve into a co-founder-level leadership position with meaningful equity ownership.

 

Current Platform

Coach Portal currently operates as a web-based platform with the following stack:

Backend

  • PHP 8.2
  • Laravel 10
  • MariaDB
  • AWS S3 for file storage

Frontend

  • React 18
  • Inertia.js
  • Tailwind CSS
  • Vite

Infrastructure

  • Docker development environment
  • AWS Elastic Beanstalk deployment

The platform is fully functional and growing, but there is significant opportunity to optimize performance, expand features, automate workflows, and introduce AI-driven tools.

 

Key Responsibilities

Technology Leadership

  • Own the overall technical architecture and scalability of the platform
  • Improve performance, reliability, and infrastructure as the user base grows
  • Ensure the platform can scale to support large network effects

Product Development

  • Work directly with the founder to shape the product roadmap
  • Build and deploy new features that support networking, hiring, and career development
  • Translate user needs into scalable product solutions

AI Integration

  • Lead the development of AI-driven features designed to improve career discovery, networking intelligence, and hiring insights
  • Explore opportunities for AI-powered tools such as:
    • Career opportunity matching
    • Staff-building tools for hiring coaches
    • Professional profile intelligence
    • Network and relationship mapping

Engineering Execution

  • Contribute directly to the codebase
  • Improve and expand the current platform
  • Oversee development partners and contractors as needed

Team Building

  • Over time, build and lead an internal engineering team
  • Establish development standards, workflows, and best practices

 

What We’re Looking For

Technical Experience

  • Strong experience building web applications
  • Experience with modern full-stack development
  • Comfort working within or expanding a Laravel + React ecosystem
  • Experience scaling early-stage platforms or marketplaces is a plus

Builder Mentality

  • Comfortable working in an early-stage startup environment
  • Willing to be hands-on technically
  • Excited about building something meaningful from the ground up

Product Thinking

  • Strong ability to translate ideas into real features
  • Interest in product design, user experience, and long-term platform growth

AI Experience

  • Experience in integrating AI and automation into real-world products
  • Ability to identify practical ways AI can enhance the platform
  • Hands-on experience applying AI/LLMs to solve business needs, including working with APIs from major platforms (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini) and utilizing AI tools in day-to-day development workflows.

Leadership Potential

  • Ability to grow into a leadership role as the company scales
  • Interest in building and managing engineering teams in the future

The CTO will have the opportunity to help build what could become the primary technology infrastructure supporting coaching careers across sports.

 

Compensation

Coach Portal is currently bootstrapped, and this role will likely begin with:

  • Meaningful equity ownership
  • Modest initial compensation
  • Significant long-term upside as the platform scales

For the right candidate, this role has the potential to become a founding executive or technical co-founder position.

 

Location

This position is remote-friendly, with collaboration occurring primarily online.
