Compost Compliance Intern
Company Overview:
We are a regional compost facility based in Woodland, CA, dedicated to sustainable waste management and resource recovery. Our facility plays a crucial role in diverting organic waste from landfills and transforming it into high-quality compost for agricultural and landscaping purposes for the surrounding communities. Northern Recycling is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Compost Compliance Intern to join our team. This position would be located at Northern Recycling, in Woodland, CA at the Yolo County Central Landfill.
Job Summary:
This position will assist the Operations Manager in monitoring and maintaining compliance with environmental permits and regulations for the Composting Facility at Northern Recycling. The primary objective of this role is to monitor and maintain Best Management Practices (BMPs) for the composting operations and assist with environmental compliance. As a compost compliance intern, you will gain hands-on field testing and monitoring experience. The qualified individual will be expected to assist with onsite monitoring of parameters required by the Yolo-Solano Air Quality Management District (YSAQMD), the Waterboard, and other agencies.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Monitoring and maintaining BMPs for the composting operations with use of onsite tools and equipment
- Recordkeeping and maintenance of YSAQMD approved logs
- Coordinate and perform monitoring and testing requirements for the covered aerated static pile (CASP) composting facility and based on YSAQMD permit regulations
- Complete and document site inspections
- Maneuvering in and around composting operations and equipment in a safe manner and following all safety principles and precautions applicable to onsite operations
- Assisting with Senate Bill 1383 sampling requirements for organics

Desired Qualifications:
- In pursuit of a bachelor’s degree or has beginner’s experience in the environmental sector
- Excellent communication, organizational, problem-solving skills, and ability to learn quickly
- MS Office software and other software normally used in environmental consulting or ability and desire to learn
- Passionate about the waste industry and interested in learning about large scale organic waste management
- Knowledge of environmental regulations and laws
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in data analysis and reporting tools.
Skills:
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to prioritize multiple tasks
- Comfortable in a dynamic work environment and ability to adapt to new responsibilities
- Bilingual skills are helpful but not required
- Ability to meet/exceed critical deadlines
Physical Requirements:
- Climb up and down compost piles frequently and travel across rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces at the facility.
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements.
- Work at heights greater than ten feet.
- Ability to lift 50+ pounds.
