Assistant Manager - Events & Operations
Assistant Manager - Events & Operations
BattleGR / BGR Event Center
Comstock Park, MI
$20–$22/hour | Full-Time | Benefits Included
The Role:
We're looking for a sharp, personable leader who can run a shift like they own it - someone who notices the details others miss, stays cool when plans change, and makes guests AND staff feel taken care of.
This is a hands-on leadership role in a high-energy entertainment venue. You'll lead corporate events, weddings, birthday parties, and walk-in activities (laser tag, axe throwing, VR, archery tag). You'll manage staff, solve problems in real time, and make judgment calls that keep events running smoothly - like when a wedding party decides to change their dinner time as guests are arriving, or when you need to reshuffle coverage because someone called out.
If you're someone who thrives when every day is different, loves leading a team, and gets satisfaction from making events run seamlessly even when things don't go as planned - this could be your spot.
What You'll Own:
Event Leadership
- Run shifts independently with minimal oversight - you're the leader on the floor
- Direct staff during high-volume events and busy weekends
- Execute events from setup through breakdown, ensuring every detail lands
- Make real-time decisions that protect the guest experience (and know when to escalate)
Team Management
- Coach and develop your team - people should love working with you AND respect your leadership
- Delegate clearly and follow up (not just hope it gets done)
- Have direct conversations when something's off - supportively but firmly
- Step in to cover shifts when coverage falls through (it happens)
Operational Excellence
- Use slower periods to knock out detailed task lists (inventory, maintenance checks, prep)
- Maintain safety and operational standards across all activities
- Spot small problems before they become big ones
- Keep things running so smoothly that guests never see the work behind it
What Makes Someone Great at This:
✓ They see the details - You notice when something's off before it becomes a problem
✓ People genuinely like them - Guests AND staff. You're firm when needed but approachable always
✓ They stay calm under pressure - Things go sideways in live events. You adapt and solve it
✓ They take ownership - You don't wait to be told what needs doing
✓ They communicate clearly - Your team knows what you need, why it matters, and when you need it
✓ They're reliable - When the schedule gets demanding, you show up
Experience We're Looking For:
- Previous leadership or supervisory experience (restaurant management, retail management, event coordination, hospitality supervisors - we care more about how you led than where)
- Experience in fast-paced, customer-facing environments where you had to think on your feet
- Comfortable giving feedback and holding people accountable (even when it's uncomfortable)
- Track record of being the person others count on
Schedule Reality:
- Full-time position with evening and weekend shifts required (this is event-based work)
- Some days are slammed, some are slower with structured task lists to complete
- We work with your schedule outside peak times when possible
What You Get:
Compensation & Benefits
- $20–$22/hour based on experience
- Paid time off
- Free activities for you, friends, and family
- Professional development and training budget
Growth & Support
- Clear path to Event Director or specialized department head roles
- Direct support from GM for day-to-day operations
- Owner (Jenny) available for strategic decisions and big-picture stuff
- Authority to run your shift your way (within our standards)
- Training and mentorship - we want to develop leaders, not just fill shifts
The Work Environment
- Fast-paced and engaging - boredom is not a problem here
- Team culture that values accountability AND having each other's backs
- Autonomy to make decisions and lead
- Variety - corporate team building one day, weddings the next, walk-in guests after that
This Role is Perfect For Someone Who:
- Wants leadership responsibility without corporate bureaucracy
- Gets energized by variety and solving problems on the fly
- Likes being the person others look to when things get hectic
- Takes pride in details AND the big picture
- Wants to grow into an Event Director or department head role
This Role Won't Be a Fit If:
- You prefer predictable 9-5 schedules (events happen evenings/weekends)
- You avoid difficult conversations or accountability moments
- You need constant direction or prefer limited responsibility
- You're looking for a stepping stone and not invested in event/hospitality work
To Apply:
Send your resume and a brief note (3-4 sentences is fine) covering:
- Your leadership experience - where you led and what you managed
- A time you had to make a quick decision during a busy/chaotic moment
- Why event-based work appeals to you
