Specifically, this intern will help scale and professionalize cost improvement efforts by bringing fresh analytical energy to the Transportation Team. The primary goal is to transition manual tracking processes toward robust, data-driven methodologies that optimize domestic spend and international freight costs.

Key Responsibilities:

Project-Specific Duties (Logistics & Cost Optimization):

  • Analyze domestic and international spend data to identify high-cost lanes, carriers, or patterns, such as excess accessorial fees and empty miles.
  • Expand cost containment methodologies by building or improving dashboards to capture and categorize all transportation invoices and spend data.
  • Support the bid/RFP process for domestic freight carriers and landside logistics providers, including gathering data, preparing bid packages, and analyzing responses.
  • Identify quick-win savings opportunities through shipment consolidation, mode shifts, route optimization, or carrier rationalization.
  • Modernize tracking tools by transitioning manual Google Sheets processes toward scalable solutions like Domo, BI tooling, or basic Excel automation.
  • Assist in calculating and fine-tuning OSJL Fleet costs, specifically focusing on cost-per-mile metrics.

General Internship Duties:

  • Prepare and deliver a final presentation to OSJL executive leadership and ownership at the conclusion of the program, summarizing key projects, insights, and achievements.
  • Participate in weekly educational programming and development workshops designed to enhance professional skills and industry knowledge.
  • Attend in-person and virtual events to build relationships across the Company.
  • Shadow associates to gain an understanding of department roles and assist with projects in furtherance of department objectives.
  • Acquire an understanding of the business environment, conduct, compliance, and ethics of a retail organization.

Qualifications:

  • Enrollment in an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree program is required, with strong academic credentials. Preferred fields include Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Analytics, Industrial Engineering, or Finance.
  • Strong analytical skills with proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Excel) and Google platforms (Sheets), including VLOOKUPs and pivot tables.
  • Familiarity with data tools such as SQL, Tableau, Power BI, or Google Data Studio is highly relevant to the project goal.
  • Interest in transportation/logistics; prior coursework or experience in freight, procurement, or cost analysis is preferred.
  • Detail-oriented and proactive mindset, with the ability to work comfortably with large datasets.
  • Ability to work a full-time schedule. Must have reliable transportation to attend program educational experiences at different Company locations.

Work Environment:

  • This role follows a hybrid model with a mandatory minimum of 3 days in the office per week. Hybrid work options are not guaranteed and are subject to change at any time based upon Company policy, associate performance, and business needs.
  • Work is primarily performed in a climate-controlled office environment, sitting at a desk or computer workstation for extended periods.
  • Within Company locations, the intern may be assigned a Company computer. When working remotely, the intern is responsible for setting up a professional workspace and must be available during working hours.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
