Editorial Design Fellow (Student / Emerging Creative)

Supporting COLOR THEORY Magazine

Magazine Layout | Editorial Design Systems | Visual Identity

 

COLOR THEORY Magazine — an independent digital fashion and art publication exploring style through identity, history, and visual storytelling — is seeking an Editorial Design Fellow to support the development of the magazine’s layout systems, visual identity, and publication design across digital and print formats.

 

Led by Kaila Symone, Wardrobe Stylist, Creative Director, and Editor-in-Chief, COLOR THEORY offers students and emerging creatives the opportunity to work inside a real editorial ecosystem. The magazine blends fashion, culture, and storytelling while providing hands-on experience in publishing, editorial design, and brand development.

 

This role is ideal for a design student or recent graduate interested in editorial design, magazine publishing, typography, and visual systems who wants to gain real-world experience designing a publication from the inside.

This is a paid opportunity and eligible for academic credit, offering the chance to build a strong portfolio through applied editorial work.

 

Role Overview

This role includes:

Magazine Layout & Editorial Design

  • Design page layouts and spreads for upcoming issues of COLOR THEORY Magazine
  • Apply typography, imagery, and grid systems to create visually balanced editorial pages
  • Collaborate with writers, photographers, and editors to translate stories into visual form

Design Systems & Publication Structure

  • Help develop repeatable layout templates for articles, interviews, photo essays, and recurring features
  • Assist in building the magazine’s typography hierarchy and visual layout standards
  • Support the creation of consistent design systems used across issues

Brand Identity & Editorial Materials

  • Assist in developing visual assets such as press kits, contributor decks, and promotional materials
  • Ensure visual consistency between the magazine, website, and social platforms
  • Contribute ideas that strengthen COLOR THEORY’s visual identity

 

Qualifications

  • Current student or recent graduate in graphic design, communication design, visual communication, or related fields
  • Strong interest in magazine publishing, editorial design, and typography
  • Familiarity with design tools such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, or similar software
  • Curiosity about fashion media, visual storytelling, and strong attention to detail 

Coursework, class projects, personal portfolios, and student publications are all welcome.
