Program Coordination and Data Intern

PLEASE NOTE: Although this posting may display a longer availability window on Handshake due to system requirements, applications for this internship must be submitted by March 27.

This internship is part of the BRIDGE Fellows program, a workforce development initiative coordinated by the Kent County Health Department and the Grand Rapids LGBTQ Health Care Consortium. BRIDGE Fellows are hired and supported by KCHD and the Consortium but placed with community partner organizations across Kent County to work on projects that address local public health priorities. While the Fellow will spend most of their time working with the host site listed below, they will also participate in cohort activities, mentorship, and professional development coordinated by KCHD and the Consortium.

Host Site: A Glimpse of Africa

Time Commitment: 11-20 hours per week

Project Description:

The Program Coordination & Data Intern will support administrative coordination, documentation, and data management activities that help ensure the successful implementation of community health and wellness programs serving the immigrant, refugee, and New American communities. A Glimpse of Africa (AGOA) works with local service providers, advocates with lived experience, and community partners to deliver outreach events, screenings, workshops, and educational resources designed to increase awareness of health supports and improve access to culturally responsive services.

The intern will assist with organizing program documentation, maintaining records related to outreach and community engagement, and supporting internal coordination efforts that allow the organization to track program activities and outcomes. Responsibilities may include organizing meeting notes and agendas, maintaining records of community partners and outreach efforts, compiling and maintaining a mental health resource list, and helping organize data collected through events and program activities.

The intern may also have opportunities to support the organization’s grant management and fundraising efforts, should they have an interest. This could include assisting with grant reporting and tracking, compiling program data needed for grant reports, and conducting background research to support grant writing. The intern may also assist with basic fundraising activities such as organizing donor information or supporting preparation of materials for fundraising initiatives.

Through this internship, students will gain experience in nonprofit program coordination, data organization, grant reporting, and impact documentation while contributing to initiatives that address social determinants of health and improve access to health resources within underserved communities.

Community Importance:

Community-based organizations play an essential role in improving access to health and wellness resources for populations that may face barriers to traditional systems of care. For many immigrant and refugee communities, barriers such as language access and unfamiliarity with healthcare systems can make it difficult to connect with needed services. Programs that provide culturally responsive outreach and education help bridge these gaps and ensure community members are aware of available resources and support.

Effective program coordination and data tracking are critical to sustaining these efforts. Accurate documentation of outreach activities, community partnerships, and program outcomes allows organizations to evaluate their impact, demonstrate the value of their work to funders, and secure resources needed to continue serving the community. By supporting data organization, documentation, and grant-related activities, the intern will contribute to strengthening the organization’s ability to sustain and expand mental health and wellness initiatives that serve immigrant and refugee communities in Kent County.
