PLEASE NOTE: Although this posting may display a longer availability window on Handshake due to system requirements, applications for this internship must be submitted by March 27.
This internship is part of the BRIDGE Fellows program, a workforce development initiative coordinated by the Kent County Health Department and the Grand Rapids LGBTQ Health Care Consortium. BRIDGE Fellows are hired and supported by KCHD and the Consortium but placed with community partner organizations across Kent County to work on projects that address local public health priorities. While the Fellow will spend most of their time working with the host site listed below, they will also participate in cohort activities, mentorship, and professional development coordinated by KCHD and the Consortium.
Host Site: Exalta Health (click here for more information on the organization)
Time Commitment: 11-20 hours per week
Project Description:
The Data Analyst Intern role at Exalta Health will enhance the organization’s ability to use data to improve patient care, demonstrate impact, and support funding sustainability. Serving uninsured, underinsured, and refugee populations, Exalta relies on accurate and timely reporting to guide decisions and meet grant and regulatory requirements.
This project will develop and maintain weekly and monthly dashboards to track clinical, operational, and financial metrics such as patient volume, payer mix, and population health trends. The Analyst will produce statistical reports for leadership, support board reporting, and contribute data analysis and visualizations.
The Data Analyst will manage grant reporting when applicable by collecting, validating, analyzing, and submitting required outcome, demographic, and performance data to ensure timely, accurate compliance with funder requirements. They will also support strategic planning by conducting trend analyses, forecasting service demand, and translating data into actionable insights that guide leadership decision-making and organizational growth.
Community Importance:
As a nonprofit safety-net clinic serving uninsured, underinsured, and refugee populations, Exalta relies heavily on accurate, timely data to monitor patient access, track quality measures, fulfill grant and regulatory reporting requirements, and inform strategic decision-making.
Without dedicated analytic capacity, reporting workflows become fragmented, quality improvement efforts slow, and compliance risks increase.
This project will fill that critical gap by restoring structured data oversight, strengthening weekly and monthly reporting processes, and ensuring consistent grant and annual reporting (when applicable).
Project Deliverables:
- Weekly and monthly performance dashboards tracking patient statistics
- Bi-monthly board-ready data summaries and visualizations
- Timely and accurate grant reporting, including outcomes and demographic summaries (if/when Exalta has grants requiring reporting)
- Data validation and quality assurance protocols for EHR documentation
- Standardized reporting toolkit (report templates, metric definitions, and data dictionary)
- Trend analyses and forecasting reports to support strategic planning
- Documentation of key metrics
