Salary: Hourly, $17-20 per hour
Training Commitment: Two-Year Employment Commitment to the School
Program Sponsorship: Online Montessori Certification Program (School-Sponsored)
Position Overview:
Are you an experienced Assistant Teacher interested in becoming a certified Montessori educator? Hoboken Montessori School (HMS) is seeking a dedicated Assistant Teacher to join our team as a Teacher in Training, a professional growth opportunity designed for assistants who want to deepen their practice and pursue a career in Montessori education.
Prior Montessori experience is not required. HMS is seeking strong assistant teachers who are eager to learn the Montessori method and grow within a collaborative school environment. HMS will sponsor the candidate’s online Montessori certification while providing hands-on experience working alongside Lead Teachers and administrators.
As part of this opportunity, the Teacher in Training will make a two-year commitment to HMS, reflecting a shared investment in professional development and the school community. While completion of the program does not guarantee a Lead Teacher position, the role provides valuable mentorship and practical classroom experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the classroom under the guidance of a certified Montessori Lead Teacher.
- Participate in all required training and coursework associated with the online Montessori certification program within the allotted time.
- Prepare classroom materials and support the Montessori learning environment.
- Engage with children in a respectful and nurturing manner, fostering independence and curiosity.
- Maintain a safe and clean classroom environment in accordance with Montessori principles and school policies.
- Observe and document student progress, providing feedback to the Lead Teacher as needed.
- Support children in their social-emotional development and conflict resolution using Montessori-aligned techniques and Positive Discipline.
- Assist with classroom management, transitions, and maintaining order throughout the day.
- Lead a summer camp classroom if needed, which includes preparing lessons, collaborating with summer staff assistants, and managing the daily schedule.
- Communicate effectively with parents, staff, and administration, maintaining professionalism and confidentiality.
- Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and school events as required.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as an Assistant Teacher, preferably in a Montessori setting.
- Passion for Montessori education and a commitment to completing certification.
- Strong classroom management skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a teaching team.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to adapt to different classroom environments and work with multiple age groups (15 months-6 years).
- Dependable, responsible, and committed to a two-year tenure at HMS.
- Ability to meet physical demands of the role, including lifting up to 40 pounds in connection with the handling of children, assume postures at low levels to allow physical activity with children, and the ability to walk, squat, kneel, sit on the floor, and stand for extended periods of time.
