Overview

Since 1956, Berns Garden Center and Landscaping has been the heart and soul of delivering exceptional horticulture and landscaping services to our community in Southwest Ohio. We are excited to bring on a Landscape Design Assistant to support our landscape design team and educate the next class of landscape designers entering the industry. 

 

JOB PURPOSE:

Landscape Design Assistant provides support to the landscape design team with a variety of design, project planning, and administrative tasks. This internship offers hands-on experience in landscape design, site analysis, and digital plan development. The intern will assist with translating conceptual ideas into professional design visuals while gaining practical experience in the landscape design process

This position is a seasonal internship, at 15-28 hours per week for four months per year (May-August). Scheduling may be flexible to accommodate school or other commitments.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 100% (including but not limited to):

Project Planning 25%

  • Assist landscape designers with site measurements, base map creation, design development, renderings, visual aids, and project estimations.
  • Participate in occasional site visits and field measurements as needed.

CAD Design 25%

  • Convert hand-drawn landscape sketches into digital landscape plans.

Design Presentations 25%

  • Support the design team with preparation of presentation materials and visual concepts for client proposals. 

Documentation 25%

  • Help organize project files, drawings, and design documentation.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Required:

  • Current student or recent graduate in Landscape Architecture, Landscape Design, Horticulture, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar CAD design software.
  • Basic understanding of landscape design principles and drafting techniques.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with designers and project staff.

Preferred:

  • Experience creating digital renderings or landscape visuals.
  • Interest in plant selection, landscape materials, and outdoor design.
  • Strong communication and willingness to learn in a hands-on environment.

 

JOB ENVIRONMENT: 

Up to 75% of this job is done inside the building and the remaining 25% is outside with some travel to client sites.  When outside there is exposure to heat, sun, high humidity, rain or cold. There is exposure to packaged soil and soil amendments, packaged chemicals, pollen, seeds and various types of plants.  When inside the temperature is regulated.  Drafting tables, drawing tools and computers are provided. Some sitting, standing, bending, kneeling is required. The tools used in this job include calculators, drafting tools, smart phones, computers, fax, and copier.
