Junior Employee Benefits Analyst Intern

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

 

POSITION SUMMARY: The Junior Analyst Intern supports the Employee Benefits consulting team by assisting with financial reporting, claims analysis, and data management related to employer-sponsored group health insurance plans. This internship is designed for college students nearing graduation who are interested in developing risk management, analytical, financial, and consulting skills within the healthcare and insurance industry. This role provides hands-on exposure to health plan analytics, underwriting concepts, and client consulting workflows, with structured learning and mentorship from experienced benefits consulting professionals.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Assist in the preparation of monthly and quarterly claims experience reports for employer group health plans
  • Analyze medical and pharmacy claims data to identify trends, utilization patterns, and cost drivers
  • Support basic financial modeling related to renewals, plan design changes, and funding analysis (fully insured vs. self-funded)
  • Help reconcile carrier and vendor reports, invoices, and funding summaries
  • Enter, validate, and maintain accurate plan, census, and claims data in internal systems and spreadsheets
  • Assist in the creation of client-facing reports, summaries, and presentation materials 
  • Perform data quality checks and audits to ensure reporting accuracy and consistency
  • Provide analytical and administrative support to Consultants, Account Managers, and Analysts
  • Assist with renewal and marketing preparation, including data collection and formatting
  • Support ad-hoc analytical projects related to benchmarking, plan performance, and cost containment initiatives
  • Develop foundational knowledge of employee benefits, including medical, pharmacy, stop-loss, and funding arrangements
  • Learn how data and financial analysis support client strategy and decision-making
  • Participate in training sessions, team meetings, and mentorship opportunities

 

KEY PLATFORMS:

  • EXCEL CLIENT FINANCIAL REPORTING: Monthly and Quarterly financial reports and renewal projections.
  • CARRIER FINANCIAL PORTALS: Pull insurance carrier reports to be analyzed and used in the monthly and quarterly financial statements and renewal projections.
  • INNOVU: Data analytic warehouse pulling financial, claim, pharmacy, network reporting used to build strategic cost saving initiatives on self-funded and fully insured client benefit policies.

 

KEY SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITES: 

  • This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Pursuing or within six months of graduation from a bachelor’s degree in risk management, finance, math/statistics, health insurance or any associated field.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This position primarily operates in a professional office environment. The employee is regularly required to sit or stand for extended periods, use hands to operate a computer, keyboard and other office equipment. The role requires clear verbal and written communication, including use of the telephone, email, and other collaboration tools. Periodic standing, walking, and light lifting or carrying of materials (generally up to 10 pounds) may be required. COMPENSATION INFORMATION:

  • Non-Exempt
  • Pay Range (Dependent on experience and/or qualification): $18.81–25/hour
