Creative Writing Summer Camp Teaching Assistant

Title: Creative Writing Summer Camp Teaching Assistant 

Reports to: Curriculum Coordinator

Working hours: 1 week long, ~3.5 hours per day (TAs arrive 30 minutes before camp begins and leave when all campers depart for the day); 5 camps will run in July 2026:

  • July 6-10, 2026, 1-4pm: Fiction, Nonfiction, & Poetry (9th-12th)
  • July 13-17, 2026, 9am-12pm: Introduction to Writing & Performing (6th-8th)
  • July 20-24, 2026, 9am-12pm: Fiction, Nonfiction, & Poetry (7th-10th)
  • July 20-24, 2026, 1-4pm: Live Lit: Performance & Creative Writing (9th-12th)
  • July 27-31, 2026, 9am-12pm: Fiction, Nonfiction, & Poetry (6th-8th)

Job type: Summer, temporary

Physical location: In person at our studio: 4043 N. Ravenswood, #222, Chicago, IL 60613

Compensation: $400 per camp

 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Lead Instructor with organizing and delivering creative writing lessons, leading small group activities/discussions as needed
  • Provide individualized support to students as they brainstorm, outline, and develop their stories, poems, and/or other writing projects
  • Foster an inclusive, respectful, and community-centered environment for students to express themselves and share their writing
  • Assist in setting up and managing camp materials and supplies
  • Provide support for an end-of-week showcase where students celebrate their writing
  • Help manage classroom dynamics and ensure that students follow camp guidelines
  • Maintain open communication with Lead Instructor, Stories Matter Foundation staff, and parents to ensure a positive experience for all participants

 

Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm for creative writing and a strong interest in working with youth
  • Previous experience in teaching, tutoring, or working with children in a camp or educational setting is a plus
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Must be between the ages of 18 and 22 (the position is grant-funded with age restrictions)
  • Background check required
