Engineering Intern (Summer 2026)

City of Jackson – Engineering Department

The City of Jackson Engineering Department is seeking a Civil Engineering student intern to join our team for the Summer 2026 internship program. This position provides hands-on experience in municipal engineering operations and infrastructure management.

This internship offers an excellent opportunity for students to gain practical experience working with transportation data, GIS systems, and public infrastructure projects while supporting ongoing engineering initiatives within the City.

Position Details

  • Position Type: Summer Internship
  • Start Date: Early May 2026
  • End Date: Late August 2026 (until fall semester begins)
  • Hours: 40 hours per week
  • Pay Rate: $20.50 per hour

This internship may also lead to additional opportunities during winter and spring academic breaks.

Key Responsibilities

The intern will assist the Engineering Department with a variety of projects, including:

  • Collecting and cataloging traffic count data
  • Assisting with the development of a street light inventory
  • Inspecting traffic control signs and signals for visibility issues and identifying tree trimming needs
  • Supporting the City’s GIS Coordinator with database updates

Preferred Qualifications

  • Rising junior or above, currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, GIS or a related field
  • Interest in transportation, municipal engineering, or GIS
  • Strong organizational and data management skills
  • Ability to work outdoors and conduct field inspections as needed
  • Capable of working independently on assigned tasks and meeting established deadlines
