Summer Camp Nurse

Camp Nurse Job Description


 

Title: Camp Nurse

  • We offer 8-week (preferred), 4-week, 2-week and 1-week agreements for nursing staff, along with per diem coverage roles. Applicants available for longer duration, with 8-weeks being that preferred commitment, will be prioritized. 

Camp Information

Infirmary Staffing and Hours: 

  • The infirmary is open 7 days a week from 7:30am until all campers have been put to bed. The Registered Nurse works independently in the infirmary with support from an infirmary assistant. 
  • Available Nursing shifts are: 7:30am - 3:30pm and 3:30pm - 11:30pm
  • Overnight, either a Registered Nurse or the Infirmary Assistant provides on-call assistance via telephone or in-person for Campers experiencing illness and/or injury overnight
     

Minimum Qualifications Required:

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut 
  • Minimum required certifications: CPR and First Aid
  • Minimum of 3 years of nursing experience, preferably in a school setting, emergency department, or urgent care setting. 
  • Physical and mental endurance to respond or assist in responding during an emergency 
  • Can communicate effectively with people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds (including racial, national, ethnic, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic)
  • Competent and comfortable using: electronic medical records, Google Suite applications (Google Sheets, Google Docs, Google Drive), Excel, email communication.
  • Models appropriate behavior and a positive, resilient attitude for students.
     

Preferred Qualifications and/or Experience: 

  • Previous experience and comfort working with LGBTQ+ and gender-expansive youth
  • Previous experience and/or a commitment to providing gender and identity affirming care
  • Nurses with previous experience in camp nursing, school nursing and/or pediatric emergency room nursing

 

Compensation

  • Pay commensurate with experience and education; Hourly rate ranges from $28-$35; negotiable
  • Full and/or partial tuition remission for Staff children to attend Buck’s Rock as Campers. 
     

Essential Job Functions: 

  1. General Duties: 
  • Ensure camper and staff safety, health and overall well-being.
  • Attend and complete all staff paperwork and trainings
  • Ensure all camper and staff health records are up to date.  Follow up with parents via phone for missing health records.
  • Represent camp as liaison with parents and physicians with appropriate, timely, and professional communication.
  • Respond to camp emergencies. Keep emergency equipment in good order with routine checks.
  • Maintain an awareness of campers with specific medical issues or special needs, including self-carry medications. 
  • Assist in meeting and maintaining State, and ACA camping standards.
  • Maintain and review all daily infirmary visit records and medication administration using electronic record keeping system. Ensure complete documentation of all treatment given, phone calls to parents and physicians and all follow up health care plans and actions.

 

  1. Illness/Injury Care: 
  • Provides assessment and treatment for Campers and Staff who present to the Infirmary with illness and/or injury. 
  • Camp Nurse is responsible for determining when campers and staff need to be seen by a doctor or taken to the ER v. Determine when 911 needs to be called 
  • Provides nursing care to Campers and Staff adhering to Camp Infirmary protocols and policies, standing orders, and professional standards.

 

  1. Medication Administration: 
  • Administers prescribed and over-the-counter medication in accordance with facility standing orders, medication policies, and orders from Authorized Prescribers.
  • Transfer, store, and administer daily prescribed medications for Campers according to Infirmary policies and procedure.
     
  1. On-Call Nursing Duties and Responsibilities
  • When on-call, the nurse is responsible for answering their telephone for the duration of their on-call shift and telephone triaging Camper and Staff health concerns.
  • The on-call nurse will determine, over the phone, whether a health concern can be managed in the bunk, by Guidance Staff or requires further in-person evaluation by the Camp Nurse.
  • The nurse will be expected to be physically present at camp when on-call; there is an furnished, private bedroom available in the Infirmary where the on-call Nurse will be expected to spend the night when they are on-call.
  • Evaluate and treat Camper and/or Staff illness and injury overnight in the infirmary, when further in-person evaluation by the Camp Nurse is required.
