LBFE’s philosophy, programs, and activities are focused on alleviating loneliness and isolation among older adults in Chicago, Northwest Indiana, and DuPage and Kane Counties. The need for social interactions is critical to the human spirit and we believe that nurturing the soul is as important as feeding the body.
Summer Experiences Interns bring fun and engagement to older adults across DuPage and Kane Counties through in- person activities and special summer programs.
Supervisor: DuPage/Kane County Expansion Program Planner
Responsibilities:
- Visit older adults in their own homes, within a particular section of DuPage and Kane counties.
- Create special summer experiences for older adults.
- Drive older adults and participate with them at parties or other activities.
- Call older adults to schedule a visit or pick-up time.
- Assist with program/activity facilitation.
Details:
- Part-time 10 to 12-week summer internship, beginning Monday, June 1.
- $16.60 per hour, with a $40 monthly phone stipend.
- Mileage reimbursement, if driving personal vehicle.
- Driving an LBFE vehicle may be available for those at least 21 years old
Required Skills:
- Excellent ability to communicate with individuals and teams, including older adults, volunteers, intern teammates, and supervisors.
- Awareness and empathy to older adults’ needs.
- Respect for the individual and an understanding that friendship is essential in the lives of all people, especially isolated older adults living alone.
- Ability to clearly listen and easily carry on a conversation.
- Must have a driver’s license with at least 1 year of driving experience.
Learning Objectives:
- Training and Experiences: Gain exposure and knowledge around the field of aging, along with a diverse group of committed older adults, volunteers, and staff.
- Organization and Management: Plan, coordinate, and implement daily schedules.
- Analysis and Problem Solving: With staff support, identify, review, and solve problems.
- Relationship building: Build social and cultural sensitivity.
Schedule:
- Monday to Friday
- Hours are flexible.
