Roving Interpretive Naturalist
Position Title: Roving Interpretive Naturalist
Location: Work will require travel to various elementary schools, libraries, community centers, and parks in Fairfax County. Ability to travel throughout Fairfax County is essential, and possession of a car is recommended.
Hours: Hours will vary by season. Programs may be scheduled year-round, and the busiest seasons will be from April-November.
- Nature outreach programs may be scheduled at any point in the week, including frequent evenings and weekends. This position is part time, and the schedule is somewhat flexible depending on candidates’ availability. Outreach naturalists should expect to work 3-4 programs per week during the busy season.
- Most programs are from 1-3 hours, not including 1 hour for briefing, set-up, and tear-down. Some special events may be longer. MWEE programs may be scheduled in the morning or afternoon during the school day. When not scheduled to teach a MWEE or support the Wonder Wagon Mobile Nature Center, Roving Naturalists may work additional hours assisting other interpretive programs at Fairfax County parks. These additional opportunities may take place during evening and weekend hours.
Salary: $13.00 - $19.00 per hour
Overview: Share your passion for nature and the outdoors throughout Fairfax County! The Roving Naturalist position will educate children, families, and members of the public on natural history, environmental stewardship, and green actions through mobile outreach programming. This position will primarily work with FCPA’s Wonder Wagon Mobile Nature Center (MNC), FCPA’s Watch the Green Grow (WTGG) program, and with FCPA’s Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE) field trip programs.
Duties:
- Instruct and implement interpretive nature programming throughout Fairfax County with the Wonder Wagon Mobile Nature Center, Watch the Green Grow program, and with MWEE field trips.
- Programs may include: structured educational field trips, tabling at local fairs and festivals, educational talks for community groups, special events, and more.
- Provide a positive experience to members of the public learning about nature and environmental stewardship, implements culturally and developmentally sensitive outreach techniques.
- May include development of educational outreach programs.
- Communicates effectively with staff and patrons of all ages and backgrounds.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education in natural history, biology, ecology, life sciences, and other natural history topics.
- Ability to travel throughout Fairfax County.
- Experience public speaking and delivering educational programming.
- Valid driver's license. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong interest in outdoor or environmental education or interpretation and resource stewardship and conservation.
- Experience working with children or members of the public in an outdoor setting.
- Continuous pursuit of education in the natural history, biology, ecology, and other environmental topics (Master Naturalists and other lifelong learners are encouraged to apply).
- Bilingual.
- Capable of driving a non-CDL Mobile Nature Center van.
