Internship Description:
The Data and Research Analyst Intern will support Black Swan Consulting’s work in data analysis, research, and program evaluation. The intern will assist with collecting, organizing, and analyzing quantitative and qualitative data related to client projects, including needs assessments, stakeholder engagement, and program evaluations.
This role provides exposure to real consulting work, and projects may include supporting research initiatives, conducting literature reviews, assisting with stakeholder interview analysis, contributing to economic and community impact research, and helping prepare client-facing reports and presentations. The intern will gain hands-on experience in applied research, analytics, and consulting workflows while learning how data informs strategy and decision-making.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Complete 240 hours of work as an intern (20 hours per week, 9 weeks minimum)
- Conduct background research and literature reviews to support consulting projects
- Assist with quantitative and qualitative data collection and organization
- Support analysis of survey data, stakeholder interviews, and program data
- Help identify patterns, trends, and gaps in research findings
- Assist in preparing research summaries, reports, and presentations
- Contribute to needs assessments and program evaluation projects
- Organize datasets and assist with data visualization and interpretation
- Support development of client deliverables, including briefing documents and reports
- Participate in internal team meetings and project discussions
Goals and Expectations of the Intern:
The goal of this internship is to provide hands-on experience in applied research and data-driven consulting. By the end of the internship, the intern should develop stronger skills in research methods, data interpretation, and communicating analytical findings in a professional environment.
The intern is expected to demonstrate curiosity, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn. They should be comfortable working with data, conducting research, and contributing to collaborative projects.
Through this experience, the intern will gain exposure to consulting workflows, program evaluation methodologies, and the role of data in informing strategic decisions. The internship aims to help the student build practical analytical skills while contributing meaningful support to real-world projects.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate OR graduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno after the Spring ‘26 semester
- Spring ‘26 or earlier graduates are not eligible for the Wolf Pack STEM Internship Program
- Student must be enrolled in a major or minor program in the following colleges:
- Agriculture, Biotechnology, and Natural Resources (CABNR)
- Business
- Engineering
- Science
- Public Health/Orvis
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
- Ability to work with data using tools such as Excel, Google Sheets, or similar platforms
- Strong written communication skills with the ability to summarize research and findings clearly
- Attention to detail and ability to organize information effectively
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a professional environment
- Interest in research, program evaluation, or data-informed decision-making
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a small consulting team environment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with datasets, surveys, or research projects
- Familiarity with data analysis or visualization tools (Excel advanced functions, Power BI, Tableau, or similar tools)
- Experience conducting literature reviews or qualitative research
- Coursework or experience in statistics, research methods, or program evaluation
- Interest in consulting, public policy, economic research, or nonprofit program evaluation
- Ability to identify patterns or insights in data and translate findings into clear recommendations
- Strong curiosity and problem-solving mindset
Desired Schedule for Intern:
The internship schedule will be flexible to accommodate academic commitments. The intern is expected to work approximately 15-20 hours per week during the academic term.
Work will primarily be conducted remotely, with occasional in-person meetings or events if the intern is located in the local area.
Typical work hours will take place during standard business hours, Monday through Friday. Specific scheduling will be coordinated with the supervisor to ensure alignment with project deadlines and team meetings.
Interns will be required to complete 240 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
