Market Development Representative

Role Overview

The Market Development Representative (MDR) is responsible for creating market activity, generating opportunities, and closing standard deals. This role is primarily field-based, focusing on building awareness, driving new business, and feeding higher-value opportunities to the appropriate account owners. The MDR helps the organization expand its presence while protecting margin and ensuring clean handoffs.

 

Key Responsibilities

Market Activity & Account Penetration (75% of time)

  • Conduct field visits, in-person meetings, and customer touchpoints
  • Reactivate dormant accounts and maintain visibility in the market
  • Promote spiffs and special product promotions
  • Drive brand awareness and customer engagement

Opportunity Identification & Handoff (10-15% of time)

  • Identify potential for higher-margin products or expanded offerings
  • Route opportunities to SAEs (strategic accounts) or ISEs (admin/account growth) as appropriate
  • Ensure handoffs are clean, complete, and documented

Simple Deal Closing (10% of time)

  • Close standard-priced deals independently
  • Adhere to pricing guidelines; escalate any deviation requests
  • Drive quick wins to build credibility and momentum

Admin & Reporting (≤5% of time)

  • Submit call/activity reports to verify field activity
  • Track simple deal closes and handoffs
  • Maintain accurate customer information

 

Success Metrics

  • Verified activity in the field (call reports, visits, events)
  • Number of opportunities identified and properly handed off
  • Simple deals closed successfully
  • Participation in spiffs and product promotions

 

Qualifications

  • Entry-level or early-career, ideally 0–3 years in sales or field role
  • Comfortable in the field with strong interpersonal skills
  • Motivated, self-starter with a focus on activity and results
  • Ability to follow pricing guidelines and escalate deviations
  • Collaborative and coachable; potential to advance to SAE
