Environmental Sampling and Data Analysis Intern

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:

Current is seeking an intern to support our water quality monitoring program, H2NOW. The Environmental Sampling and Data Analysis Intern responsibilities would include, but will not be limited to:

  • Supporting weekly river sampling, lab testing, sample drop off, and equipment maintenance for H2NOW
  • Managing data collection, cleaning, and data visualization (specifically, statistical analysis and identifying other public environmental data sources to compare H2NOW data to)
  • Assisting with Current's summer events, including our H2NOW Summer Celebration and/or tabling at community events for H2NOW-related learning activities 

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Available to work up to 20 hours per week, for at least 8 weeks, between Tuesday, May 19, 2026 - Friday, August 7, 2026
  • Available to work in-person at Current's office on Tuesdays between 9 am-5 pm
  • Ability to work in-person, in the field, around the city of Chicago
  • Actively enrolled in any higher education courses for the 2026-2027 school year
  • Flexibility to attend occasional in-person events in Chicago  

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

Our ideal candidate has the following skills and qualifications:

  • Strong organization skills and a technical background (engineering, environmental science, chemistry, etc) 
  • Interest in water and wastewater technologies
  • Experience with environmental sampling (either classroom, laboratory, or field)
  • Data analysis experience, including familiarity with one of the following: Excel, Python, R, or similar
  • Ability to adhere to standard operating procedures

Bonus skills and qualifications to have:

  • Familiarity with safety and quality assurance protocols and procedures is preferred
  • Familiarity with general software platforms, including Google (Gmail, Drive, Slides), Microsoft365 (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), and various streaming tools (Zoom, Slack)
  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills
  • Strong time management and organizational skills 
  • Ability to self-manage projects, deadlines, calendars, and files
