Position Overview

 

The GIS Intern supports the City’s Geographic Information Systems program by assisting with spatial data collection, mapping, analysis, and maintenance of geospatial databases and applications. Under the direction of GIS staff, the intern performs tasks such as editing and updating utility and infrastructure datasets, supporting field data collection using mobile GIS tools, producing maps and reports, and assisting with web and enterprise GIS applications. 

 

Position Functions

 

  • Operate ArcGIS Pro software, computer equipment and network, including electronic files.
  • Collect and verify asset information in the field utilizing Esri mobile data collection software.
  • Perform office data entry projects into GIS and Excel.  Evaluate, verify and improve accuracy of utility GIS information. Research source documents such as as-built drawings, field notes and other records to verify accuracy and completeness of data.
  • Attend meetings associated with the GIS division including weekly staff meetings, trainings and project status meetings.
  • Complete online Esri training as directed by Geospatial Innovation Manager.
  • Assist with GIS projects and perform additional duties, as assigned. 
  • Learn about the City's GIS environment, its data and its infrastructure. Gain an understanding of how the City's GIS environment supports the City's business needs.
  • Other GIS tasks as the workload demands.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 
 

  • Current enrollment in a graduate or undergraduate degree program with an interest and aptitude to work in GIS, Geography, or related field.
  • Experience with Esri ArcGIS Pro software suite.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel.
     

PREFERABLE QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

  • Experience with Esri Field Maps.
  • Experience with ArcGIS Online or Portal.
  • Valid driver license if driving.
  • Willingness to adopt AI and emerging technologies.

 

Supplemental Information

 

Applicants will be required to complete a Disclosure &Authorization Regarding Background Investigation, a Confidentiality Agreement, and the CJIS (Criminal Justice Information Services) Security Clearance process to include approval for controlled access to project information and a national fingerprint-based record check.


If driving, a driving history for the past three (3) years must reflect no violations of a driving related felony offense, or driving under the influence (DUI) which includes both drugs and alcohol, reckless driving, or hit and run involving an occupied vehicle or attended property, or an accumulation of traffic violations, plus three (3) points for each attendance at driving school (regardless of whether points were assessed against the license) where the penalty points do not exceed twelve (12).
