Civil Engineering Intern

Civil Engineering Student:  This position is designed to offer college students the opportunity to perform a variety of entry-level professional engineering work in support of the Community Development department. The position includes aspects of private development engineering within the Village. The work is performed under the limited general direction of the Community Development Private Development Engineer (a registered professional engineer). This position is seasonal.

Essential Functions

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  1. Perform inspection of privately and publicly owned detention ponds.
  2. Prepare correspondence to the pond owners to summarize the findings of the inspections.
  3. Organize and document all correspondence (written, electronic, and verbal) with pond owners.
  4. Develop a schedule to follow up with pond owners to verify the completion of necessary improvements. 
  5. Update and maintain the pond inspection database.

 

Position Qualifications

Candidates should be enrolled in an accredited civil engineering college curriculum and have earned a minimum 24 credit hours or equivalent by the start of employment.  Strong communication skills are required.  Candidates must be able to conduct site inspections in all weather conditions and locations.  An ideal candidate will have completed at least one course in Water Resource Engineering (Hydrology, Fluid Mechanics, etc.).

Highly motivated and dependable students who are taking or have taken water resources-type courses.

In progress towards earning a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental, Civil, Structural, Geotechnical, or Hydraulic Engineering.

Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and related applications.

Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

Ability to multitask, prioritize, and take direction.

Possess a valid driver’s license without major infractions.

Ability to handle multiple demands and competing priorities.

Ability to work independently after receiving initial guidance and as part of a team.

Ability to meet and deal tactfully with the general public, elected officials, vendors, employees, and citizens.

Working Condition

Work may involve long periods of computer and office work with some exposure to excessive  noise, dust, temperature, etc.  

Work involves intermittent periods of standing and walking and the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.

Requires the ability to communicate orally and in writing with supervisor and all department personnel, other Village departments, utilities, Trustees and committees, local and state agencies, attorneys, residents, contractors, vendors, and the public.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization:

Requires the ability to operate, maneuver, and/or provide simple but continuous adjustments on equipment, machinery, and tools such as a computer and other office machines, and/or materials used in performing essential functions. 

Verbal Aptitude:

Requires the ability to utilize a variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information, such as technical operating manuals,  reports, maps, reference materials, databases, statutes, procedures, guidelines, and non-routine correspondence.

Mathematical Aptitude:

Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; calculate percentages, fractions, and decimals; may require the ability to perform mathematical operations involving algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; ability to utilize field technology, including laptops, iPads, iPhones; ability to effectively utilize ESRI ArcGIS.

Functional Reasoning:

Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria and emergencies.

Physical Ability:

Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of objects weighing five to fifty pounds. 

Sensory Requirements:

Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, and sounds associated with job-related objects, materials, and tasks. 

Environmental Factors:

Ability to work under generally safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors may cause discomfort and poses a limited risk of injury.
