Physical Education Teacher

Abraham Joshua Heschel School is seeking a dedicated, energetic Physical Education Teacher to join the Middle School and High School team.

 

The Physical Education Teacher is responsible for creating a classroom environment that fosters, promotes, and develops an understanding of the relationship between healthy body function and exercise. The teacher motivates and provides developmentally appropriate instruction for all students, supporting their physical, social, and emotional well-being through meaningful movement and physical activity. Through purposeful lesson planning and exploration, the teacher helps students cultivate strength, skills, agility, poise, coordination, and lifelong healthy habits. A successful candidate sets clear expectations for classroom behavior, incorporates and maintains the communal aspect of the Heschel School in Physical Education, such as cooperation, respect, shared responsibility, and teamwork.  


 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead Grade 6-12 P.E. classes, recesses, and special events
  • Design or implement a strength training and conditioning program for the Middle School and High School
  • Develop a curriculum that promotes grade-level standards in physical education, health, and fitness
  • Co-teach Early Childhood (N, PK, & K) and Lower School (Grades 1-5) P.E. classes and recesses
  • Instruct students on the basic rules, techniques, and strategies needed to play team sports and other recreational games/activities
  • Discuss the importance of living a healthy lifestyle that includes regular physical activity
  • Monitor and document student participation and progress
  • Coach After-School Sports Clubs, and Middle School and/or High School Athletics


 

Qualifications

  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • 3-5 years teaching and/or coaching experience in Physical Education and/or Athletics
  • First-Aid-CPR-AED Certified
  • Knowledge of rules & regulations, strategies, and techniques involved with individual and team sports
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to adapt and improvise lessons based on time and/or space constraints
  • Ability to provide feedback in a manner that advances students’ knowledge, skills, and confidence
  • Passion for teaching and a willingness to learn

 

Preferred: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in physical education or related area; any level of coaching certification from a recognized sport governing body

 

This can be an ideal position for someone pursuing their MLS or interested in gaining experience in school librarianship.

The full-time equivalent salary range is $60,000 - $95,000, depending on years of experience.
