Position: Summer Camp Swim Instructor and Lifeguard

Supervised by: JCC Day Camps Aquatic Director
JOB SUMMARY
The Swim Instructor and Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring a safe and positive aquatic environment at the camp’s pool and waterfront activities. This role involves supervising swimmers, conducting swim lessons, enforcing safety procedures, and assisting in maintaining the pool and waterfront facilities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Aquatic Supervision & Safety
Monitor and supervise all pool and waterfront activities to ensure a safe environment.
Provide constant surveillance to prevent and manage injuries or emergencies.
Perform water rescues as needed and administer first aid, CPR, or other emergency care when necessary.
Respond appropriately to changes in water or weather conditions that could affect safety.
Assess and evaluate the swimming abilities of campers and staff.
Swim Instruction
Conduct swim lessons for campers following JCC Day Camps’ swim instruction program.
Provide individualized instruction and feedback to campers.
Maintain accurate weekly swim progress reports for each camper.
Program Support & Facility Management
Assist in running aquatic activities, including swimming and boating.
Enforce all safety rules and procedures for campers and staff.
Support special aquatic events and camp-wide activities.
Inspect pool and waterfront areas daily for safety hazards, cleanliness, and equipment maintenance.
Ensure waterfront areas are clean, hazard-free, and properly maintained.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
Actively participate in camp activities, events, and team meetings.
Assist in planning and facilitating special events at or near the pool or waterfront.
Serve as a positive role model for campers and fellow staff.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Certifications (must be current and valid):
Lifeguard Training Certification (or equivalent)
Water Safety Instructor Certification (or equivalent)
First Aid and CPR Certification
Experience & Skills:
Prior experience lifeguarding and providing swim instruction in a camp, pool, or waterfront setting.
Strong ability to work with children of all ages and skill levels.
Effective communication and leadership skills to instruct campers and staff.
Ability to assess camper and staff behavior and implement appropriate safety and behavior management strategies.
Physical capability to perform rescues, administer first aid, and maintain constant supervision in and around the water.
Additional Requirements:
Must pass a background check and a central registry check with the state of Michigan.
Completion of online Sexual Abuse Prevention training (provided by The J) before the start of employment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to stand for prolonged periods and perform physical activities such as bending, stooping, and stretching.
Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to handle aquatic equipment and facilitate activities.
Adequate hearing and vision to identify potential hazards and respond appropriately.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including sun and heat.
Availability to work irregular hours as needed for camp activities.
