Special Needs Counselor

JOB SUMMARY:  

This position is a 9-week contracted position who reports directly to the Unit Head and Director of Special Needs Enrichment. The individual will work as a 1:1 counselor in the Kids All Together (KAT) program and fulfill all required duties and responsibilities to that program. 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Provide accommodations (i.e. paraphrasing instructions, prompting, physical assistance, etc.) to help the camper succeed in all camp activities with their neurotypical peers;  

Encourage social interactions between the campers with and without special needs; 

Adapt activities or games to allow maximum participation and inclusion; 

Communicate effectively, both written and verbal amongst leadership staff and families; 

Help other counselors and campers learn the positive aspects of the 1:1 camper, reinforcers, interests, and strengths; 

Use best practices behavior management techniques when necessary;  

Consistent attendance is expected throughout the summer and counselors must remain committed to campers’ success throughout the summer 

 

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Experience working in a structured camp environment for children with special needs; 

Knowledge and experience working with individuals who have cognitive impairments, developmental disabilities, autism, and those who require accommodations; 

Comfortable working on a team and maintaining regular communication with other counselors and leadership staff; 

Must possess a minimum of a high school diploma or GED.  Preference to individuals pursuing a degree in psychology, ABA, social work, education, SLP, PT/OT, or special education.  

Possess CPR/first aid certification or be willing to get certified (provided during training week) 

Possess Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI) certification or be willing to get certified (provided by The J) 

Must pass a background check and central registry check with the State of Michigan.  

Must complete online Sexual Abuse Prevention training (provided by The J)
