TITLE: Development Intern
LOCATION: Hybrid from New York City or New Jersey
START DATE: July 6, 2026 through September 30, 2026 / possibility to start earlier or later
DURATION: 3 months, possibility to extend for fall 2026
POSITION REPORTS TO: Malin Evertsz Mendez
SCHEDULE DETAILS: Flexible, but ideally available at least 2 days per week or equivalent half days. Must commit to at least 15 hours per week.

SCOPE OF WORK: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their future. Founded in 1933, the IRC is at work today in more than 40 countries and in 26 U.S. cities. The IRC’s Resettlement, Asylum, and Integration (RAI) department creates opportunities for
refugees and other vulnerable migrants to survive and thrive in the US. RAI serves nearly 50,000 individuals each year in the US through a diverse portfolio of programs aimed at achieving outcomes in five impact areas: Health, Safety, Economic Wellbeing, Education, and Power.
The New York and New Jersey office supports a diverse group of clients including refugees, asylees, asylum seekers, trafficking survivors, and immigrations from a range of backgrounds. The New York and New Jersey office programs are focused on refugee resettlement, economic empowerment, health and wellness, immigration services, anti-trafficking support, and more. Our

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Development Intern will work with the Development Team for New York and New Jersey. The Development Team is responsible for raising funds to support IRC programs, building community connections, engaging potential donors, and raising the profile of IRC in NY and NJ. The Development Intern will help the Development Team grow their private
fundraising including prospecting, stewardship, communications, and events.
1. Work with the Development Team to support IRC’s work in New York and New Jersey to raise funding, engage supporters, and raise awareness
2. Content Development, Communications & Marketing Systems: Assist with writing, newsletters and program case stories following the Development Storytelling Strategy.
o Organize and build a story bank of case studies: short and long-form program and
client stories
o Liaise with program departments to curate new stories.
3. Assist with developing assets including Semi-Annual, Annual Reports, and Program one- Pagers.
4. Assist with Events.
5. Support with fundraising: donor communications, prospecting and fundraising analytics.
6. Assist with private grants life cycle
7. Bi-weekly in-person tasks from New York City Office
8. Additional administrative tasks, reports, and projects as they arise.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Intern will learn how to drive fundraising and grants portfolio for a non-profit organization.
2. Intern will gain firsthand experience with fundraising strategies and skills at a leading
non-profit organization.
3. Intern will have the opportunity to learn about IRC’s program areas in depth, including refugee resettlement, economic empowerment, health and wellness, immigration services, anti-trafficking support, and more.


REQUIREMENTS: Volunteers must be based in the U.S. Interns must be based in US, must be a US citizen or have US work authorization, must be enrolled in post-secondary institution or have graduated from a post-secondary institution within last 2 years.
The requirements include:
• Currently enrolled in Undergraduate Program or Masters Program, or have graduated from a post-secondary institution within the last 2 years. Applicants studying non-profits, International global studies, Communications, marketing are encouraged to apply.
• Strong organization and writing skills.
• Ability to work in person in New York City or New Jersey at least 1 day per week.
• Fluent in English, both spoken and written. Fluency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, Arabic, or another language is an asset, but not required.
