Learning Support Specialist

**SIGN-ON BONUS**

The successful candidate will receive a $1,000 sign-on bonus ($500 paid at time of hire and $500 paid at the end of 90 days of employment.

 

Reporting to the Director of Academic Support, the Learning Support Specialist provides research-based academic skill instruction and support to individual students and develops and delivers programming to encourage effective study skills for underprepared students. As a member of a collaborative team, the Learning Support Specialist fosters a welcoming and supportive learning space and engages enthusiastically with students and their academic work.

 

The Learning Support Specialist role is an academic year position with a prorated annual salary range of $35,670 to $43,500. The general full-time schedule during the school year is Sunday through Thursday, with some flexibility.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Meet with self-identified or Academy-identified students to develop the academic skills and habits necessary to support their academic success:
  • Meet with designated students weekly to develop effective executive functioning and study skills (e.g., prioritization, organization, time management, note-taking, test preparation, etc.);
  • Implement research-based interventions to support students with reading comprehension, written expression & organization, language acquisition, memorization and recall.
  • Maintain accurate attendance and session notes
  • Communicate progress with students, faculty, advisors, and parents regularly. 
  • Support students in effectively leveraging resources on campus including such as counseling, teacher office hours, and IT specialists
  • Develop strong, encouraging relationships with students grounded in mutual trust and respect
  • Collaborate with the Director of Academic Support on universal study skills workshops to support underprepared students:
  • Teach a course to help students develop effective study skills and work habits to support academic success;
  • Collaborate on alternative resources, workshops, and programs to help students develop learning skills.

Manage Peer Tutors:

  • Support and collaborate with the Director of Academic Support to deliver a training program for peer tutors to help them work effectively with peer students;
  • Ensure that peer tutors understand academic integrity guidelines when working with peer students.
  • Participate in Sit-Down Lunch Program
  • Serve as a table head during sit-down lunches, conversing with and getting to know a wide-swath of Deerfield Students
  •  

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Proctor supervised study times, including logging attendance, developing work plans, and proctoring assessments for students with short- and long-term accommodation plans;
  • Perform regular administrative tasks related to Academic Support including scheduling, filing accommodations requests, and drafting learning support summaries

Job Specifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree Required; Master’s Degree, Special Education or equivalent preferred
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience as a tutor, teacher, or academic interventionist
  • Strong understanding of executive functioning skills, learning disabilities, and twice-exceptional student populations
  • Excellent organization, oral and written communication skills 
  • Diplomacy to manage challenging interpersonal interactions 
  • Ability to manage, and sensitivity to, highly confidential information 
  • Excellent technical (MS Office), and data entry skills
  • Ability to multi-task effectively
  • Ability to work independently with initiative, as well as be a part of a team 
  • Detail-oriented
  • Proactively seek improvements and synergies with regards to office processes and procedures
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion and to serving the needs of a diverse community

 

Physical Job Demands:

  • Close visual acuity to view a computer terminal, analyze data and figures, and read 
  • Ability to frequently sustain substantial movements of the wrists, hands and/or fingers 
  • Ability to frequently receive and communicate information 
  • Ability to occasionally stoop or kneel 
  • Ability to occasionally lift/carry/push up to 10 pounds

Working Conditions:

The worker is mainly in an office environment and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
