This position is part of the Alaska Fellows Program. All fellows live together, “in community,” in their respective host site. Each host site is unique and remarkable.
Fellows receive housing, a $1200 monthly living stipend, and a $750 relocation stipend. The fellowship includes facilitated and funded opening and closing retreats.

Organization Description: Sheet’ká Ḵwáan Tribe/Sitka Tribe of Alaska is the federally recognized Tribal government for Sheet’ká, the traditional name for the Southeast Alaskan community known as Sitka.

As a sovereign government, Sitka Tribe serves its Tribal Citizens through a wide range of programs, including youth education programs through the Cultural Resources, Employment and Education Department; child support, child custody, transitional housing, and Elder services through the Social Services Department; fish and other traditional foods distribution through the Resource Protection Department; and much more. The Legal Department serves to enable the other Departments to do their work out in the community, by reviewing grant applications and other legal documents necessary to keep these programs running.
This position provides support and services to the STA Legal Department in implementing a new records retention policy for the Tribe’s historical legal documents, dating back to the Tribe’s self-governance compact with the U.S. Federal Government, and implementing a new records management policy for grant documents, including applications, awards, and modifications.
- ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Archival Management and Grant Management
- Catalog, digitize, and preserve documents in the Legal department’s archive;
- Design and maintain an organizational system for documents within the archive;
- Work with the Grants Specialist to organize and implement a new records management process for grant applications, awards, and modifications;
- Continue professional growth by participating in ongoing professional learning as budget and schedule allows.
B. Legal Assistance
- Work with Legal Director and Deputy Legal Director to proofread final drafts of legal documents, including internal memos, external letters, and Tribal laws and policies.
- Collect signatures for legal documents such as contracts, MOA, MOUs, and agreements.
C. Meetings, Reports, and Other Responsibilities:
- Keep the Supervisor informed of work projects, including present and potential problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing problems;
- Attend Legal Department staff meetings, STA all-staff meetings, and other meetings as requested by the Supervisor;
- Participate in STA all-staff events (which may occur after hours or on weekends) including but not limited to the Annual Meeting, Annual Native American Heritage Month parade, and other all-staff events that arise throughout the year;
- Prepare reports of activities and any other items assigned by the Supervisor;
- Respond to questions and concerns in a compassionate, courteous, and timely manner;
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all Tribal Citizen information;
- Keep a neat, clean, and professional appearance;
- Perform other duties as assigned and reasonably within the scope of duties listed above.
- Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred; preferably in computer science, library science, history, or Native American studies.
- Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Familiarity with the Native culture, history, and environment of Sheet’ká and Southeast Alaska.
- Comfort with a variety of types of communication such as phone calls, email, text messages, etc.
- Self-starter, able to plan workload and complete tasks independently.
- Strong computer, data entry, and publishing skills.
- Ability to seek support as needed.
- Ability to balance competing priorities to achieve goals and work under pressure.
- In previous employment, demonstrated ability to be a reliable worker – show up on time and consistent with the required work schedule.

- Criminal background check:
This position requires full compliance with the STA Criminal Background Check ordinance. All candidates for this position must consent to a criminal history record check, submit fingerprints, and submit a separate application for suitability.

The individual who holds this position is required to report any violation of a criminal statute within one working day of the charge or conviction to the individual’s immediate supervisor.
