Building Envelope Designer / Technician
BUILDING ENVELOPE SCIENCES – DESIGNER/TECHNICIAN
Gorman Richardson Lewis Architects, Inc. is currently hiring an entry level Designer/Technician for our Building Envelope Sciences (BES) Division. The ideal candidate will have 1 to 3 years of related experience in building envelope systems, or recent graduates in a related area of study with the following minimum requirements:
Experience:
- Professional staff member with Architectural, Engineering or Building Envelope industry experience. Familiarity with various construction types and systems on both new and existing buildings.
- Report writing and documenting field conditions.
- Drafting including construction details in AutoCAD/Revit.
- Bachelors or Master’s degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, applicable construction related experience or similar. EIT or other Building Envelope credentials preferred.
- Familiarity with applicable Building Envelope codes (MSBC, IBC) and standards (NRCA, FM, BIA, ASTM, AAMA, etc.)
Responsibilities:
- Assists in performing Building Envelope Studies including on-site review and preparation of technical reports.
- Assists in performing forensic testing of Building Envelope Components such as water testing, air infiltration testing, air/vapor barrier testing, infrared scanning.
- Assists in preparing Design Documents (SD/DD/CD) including plans, elevations, detail drawings and specifications suitable for contractor pricing, bidding and permitting.
- Assists with material quantity estimates and preliminary construction cost estimates.
- Assists with Construction Administration tasks including Construction Site Visits and associated reports, Submittal Review, RFI and Change Order review and correspondence.
- Conduct Reference checks.
- Reports to BES Project Managers and Assistant Project Managers.

- Has own transportation to travel to project sites and meetings (mileage is a reimbursable expense).
- Willing to safely work from roofs, aerial lifts, staging. All safety equipment will be supplied by GRLA, and applicant will attend virtual class to receive OSHA 10 Certification in on-site safety procedures.
- Must be able to climb ladders and lift and carry up to 50 lbs of tools and equipment if necessary.
- Able to work flexible hours based on project/office needs. There are times when visits to a project site are scheduled for early morning or later in the day.
