Position Summary:
The Hazardous Materials Technician performs a wide variety of duties for Environment, Health, and Safety (EH&S).
Responsibilities include:
- Hazardous and Radioactive Waste Collection Management and Disposal.
- Operation and maintenance of the various campus 900day hazardous waste storage facilities in conjunction with a second hazardous waste technician.
- Transportation of hazardous chemical waste according to US Department of Transportation regulations from various points generation to the appropriate 90 day storage facility.
- Collect radioactive waste from campus for storage and disposal.
- Perform chemical bulk handling operations.
The Hazardous Waste Technician has frequent oral and written communication with professional staff (Ph.D., MD, Senior Researchers, Lab Technicians), clerical staff (secretaries and clerks), physical plant staff (cleaners, shop personnel, etc.), graduate and undergraduate students, most university departments and outside vendors. Thus, the Technician must communicate well with individuals and be able to independently recognize potentially unsafe conditions and act accordingly to correct the situation. The Hazardous Materials Technician reports directly to the Hazardous Materials Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:
- An Associate’s degree in Chemistry or a closely related scientific area of study with a Chemistry concentration and two years’ experience in hazardous waste management. A combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the requirement.
- Excellent customer service skills and good interpersonal communication skills.
- Detailed knowledge and use of computer programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
- A valid New York State driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in science major with Chemistry concentration.
- Creative problem solving skills.
Physical Qualifications:
- The ability to routinely and regularly transport heavy items up to fifty (50) pounds without assistance and up to 400 pounds with mechanical assistance is also necessary to perform the job requirements.
- The incumbent must be medically cleared and physically capable of wearing respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment.

Salary Range:
$51,300 - $55,000
