We’re looking for a curious, hands-on CAD / Maker Intern to join our Design & Rapid Prototyping Lab. This role is perfect for someone who loves turning ideas into physical objects and wants real-world experience designing, building, and refining prototypes. You’ll work closely with lab staff and clients to bring custom projects from concept to manufacturable reality.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create and revise CAD models and technical drawings for prototypes and custom projects.
  • Design with manufacturability in mind (materials, tolerances, assembly, cost, and process constraints).
  • Fabricate prototypes using lab equipment such as 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, and hand tools.
  • Assist clients with custom design challenges, translating ideas and requirements into viable solutions.
  • Prepare files for fabrication and oversee builds from design through production.
  • Test, evaluate, and iterate on prototypes based on performance and client feedback.
  • Help maintain lab equipment, materials, and a safe, organized workspace.
  • Document designs, processes, and lessons learned for future reference.
  • Manage small manufacturing runs, ensuring quality and customer satisfaction.

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a certificate in Drafting & Design, Industrial Design, Product Design, Manufacturing, or a related field.
  • Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Inventor, or similar)
Strong interest in making, prototyping, and hands-on fabrication.
  • Ability to think through design problems and propose practical solutions.
  • Comfortable working both independently and in a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong communication skills and a client-focused mindset.
  • Strong willingness to learn new tools, equipment, materials, and fabrication techniques in a fast-paced prototyping environment.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have):

  • Experience with 3D printing, CNC machining, laser cutting, or shop tools
Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing (DFM/DFA) principles.
  • Basic understanding of materials (plastics, metals, composites, etc.).
  • Prior experience in a makerspace, fabrication lab, or prototyping environment.
