2026 - Met Scholars Environmental Services Outreach Intern
WHO WE ARE
The Outreach Intern will work collaboratively with the Senior Outreach Coordinator to help plan, staff, and track community engagement events and outreach efforts. The Intern will gain real-world experience in event planning, stakeholder communication, and content creation, and play a key role in our community outreach programs.
The Met Scholars and Ability internship programs are 12-week leadership development internships that provide distinctive professional experience for students from a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and abilities. These interns work the same types of meaningful positions as traditional interns and must meet the same qualifications. However, as a Met Scholar or Ability intern, you will also spend each Friday with the rest of your cohort in professional and leadership development programming, gaining new skills and creating a resume-building career pathway. The Met Scholars leadership and professional development program welcomes students and/or recent graduates from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. The Ability internship program at the Met Council is designed to increase opportunities for students and/or recent graduates who have disabilities.
Internship Information:
- Length: Summer with a chance to extend to school year
- Hours: Full-time summer and Part-time during school year if applicable
- Start Date: 06/01/2026
- Location: St. Paul
NOTE: This position is eligible for a hybrid (both remote and onsite) telework arrangement.
What does an internship with the Metropolitan Council entail?
Our internships are designed to provide students meaningful work, be an introduction to public service and a chance to discover the Metropolitan Council.
Who is the Metropolitan Council?
The Metropolitan Councils made up of several operating divisions that service the Twin Cities Metropolitan area in a number of ways.
- Metro Transit provides bus and light rail public transportation for the greater metropolitan area
- Environmental Services manages wastewater treatment plants and the regional wastewater collection system and water planning for the seven-county metropolitan region
- Community Development is responsible for helping the Council shape its regional growth plan and Metro HRA provides affordable housing programs in the region
- Metropolitan Transportation Services (MTS) is responsible for the transportation planning functions as the Twin Cities metropolitan planning organization (MPO) for transportation
- Regional Administration provides support services (Finance, Payroll, HR, etc.) for the Council
What you would do in this job
- Event Planning & Coordination: Assist in planning, setting up, and managing community events, workshops, or meetings to raise awareness, build partnerships, and drive public participation for ES’ projects and programs. Includes event staff recruitment, scheduling, and coordination.
- Outreach Strategy & Execution: Identify and reach out to community groups, schools, or partners to expand the organization’s reach.
- Public Engagement: Interact with the community, representing the organization at booths, public meetings, or in-person outreach.
What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)
- Must be enrolled in a degree seeking program (Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD.) or be a recent graduate (within the last 12 months) from a degree program.
- Candidate's residence must be in Minnesota or Wisconsin during the internship.
- An UNOFFICIAL transcript required to be attached to application.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Excellent written and verbal communication for interacting with diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently, and collaborate in teams. Quick learner, well-organized, and possessing strong attention to detail and time management skills.
- Experience translating technical information into plain language.
- A valid MN/WI driver's license
DEGREE PROGRAM/AREA OF STUDY PREFERRED
- Communications, Community Engagement, Environmental Sciences, Marketing, Public Affairs, Urban Planning, or Water Resources

If you are new to the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (safety sensitive positions only), and a background check which verifies education, employment, and criminal history.
