The Gotham Film and Media Institute celebrates and nurtures independent film and media creators, providing career-building resources, access to industry influencers, and pathways to wider recognition. We foster a community of creators, producers and distributors working across film, TV, audio and beyond to advance the future of story through our year-round programs, which include Gotham Week, Filmmaker Magazine, The Gotham Awards.
You will be joining a team of roughly one dozen full-time employees that operates more like a startup than a traditional non-profit. We take big swings, move quickly, and are very bullish about the opportunities that lay ahead for our place in independent filmmaking.
The Accounting Associate will have a wide range of responsibilities related to core accounting functions and general business operations. The ideal candidate is a mission driven professional who will treat this role as an opportunity to invest in their growth and has an interest in non-profit accounting and operations.

Location: Our office is based in the heart of Dumbo in Brooklyn, NY.
- The Accounting Associate must be able to commute to The Gotham’s Brooklyn office
- Our organization operates on a hybrid schedule (Tuesdays and Thursdays in the office; 1-2 floating days for the remainder of the week)
Compensation:
- This is a full-time role with a salary range of $72,000 - 79,000, depending on experience.
- In addition we offer a competitive benefit selection, PTO, sick and holiday time.
Responsibilities:
- Process weekly payroll run and maintain required payroll records
- Assist with accounts payable and receivable including new vendor/customer setup, entering bills and coding invoices
- Review and process employee expense reports
- Assist with management of Fiscal Sponsorship donations, fund disbursements and communication with donors and filmmakers
- Serve as a point of contact for internal accounting inquiries from departments across the organization
- Play an integral role in accounting policy and procedure creation
- Assist with monthly, quarterly and annual close procedures including monthly bank reconciliations
- Process all payment inquiries and refunds Assist in annual finance audit preparation and schedule creation
- Assist with the compilation and distribution of yearly 1099s to all independent contractors
- Assist the Controller with other operations and general office tasks on an as needed basis
- Serve as a liaison to outside accounting services to facilitate month end close and other items as assigned
Qualifications:
- 2+ years of experience in accounting roles such as Accounting Assistant, Accounting Coordinator or equivalent foundational experience (e.g., rotational programs, internships at public accounting firms)
- Strong organizational skills, including the ability to work independently, manage own work and time, and take responsibility for performance
- Undergraduate degree in a business-related field such as, accounting, business management, or administration desired but not required
- Proficiency with Quickbook Online, Bill.com, Excel and similar software
- Strong working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP or US GAAP) and an understanding of nonprofit accounting rules & regulations
