Math Tutoring Associate

NYC-based Math Tutoring Associate

#tutoring #middleschoolmath #edtech #nyc

➜ About the Project
Project Tangle & Thrive explores ways to increase engagement and motivation for middle school students in math. We engage in rapid prototyping, codesign with students, and field experiments to identify student-centered solutions that can lead to more and deeper engagement in math learning. Led by Mika Asaba, a cognitive science and developmental psychology researcher, the project brings together design and research approaches to create evidence-based and usable digital experiences.

The project is housed within Teaching Lab Studio, a group that incubates high-impact edtech tools made possible by the dramatic progress in generative AI. We believe that AI-enabled supports and tools can unlock the potential of both educators and learners in ways that haven't been imagined, especially for those furthest from opportunity.

➜ About the Role

We are seeking a NYC-based Math Tutoring Associate to work with a small cohort of middle school students at a partner middle school in New York City. This is a small, focused role ideal for someone who is warm, relational, and genuinely excited about helping students who have struggled to connect with school. You will work closely with students during the school day in their math block, supporting them as they work through digital math tools used in the classroom.

You will also collaborate regularly with our research team to share observations about what's working. We're looking for someone who can meet students where they are, build real trust, and help them rediscover a reason to engage.

➜ What you will do:

  • Work one-on-one with 2-3 middle school students on-site at our partner middle school during the school day, providing in-person support as they complete digital math lessons and mastery checks
  • Provide scaffolding when students are stuck or disengaged
  • Explore with students the motivational and psychological side of disengagement: what makes school feel low-priority, what they care about, and what would make math feel more worth their time
  • Keep session notes after each session documenting what you tried, how students responded, and what seemed to move the needle
  • Meet with the research team to share observations and help us understand what's working or not

➜ What you bring:

  • Experience supporting middle school students with their math work, ideally in a tutoring, teaching, or mentoring capacity
  • Warmth, patience, and genuine enjoyment of working with youth
  • Availability during school hours and ability to travel to the Bronx 2-4 times per week
  • Interest in the psychology of motivation and student engagement
  • Familiarity with or curiosity about educational technology is a plus, but not required

This is a part-time, in-person contractor (1099) role for 3 months based in New York City, at approximately 10-20 hours per week, paying $35-50/hour. We are looking to fill this role as soon as possible. There is a possibility of extending depending on the trajectory and needs of the project. People of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

To apply, please complete this application form, sharing your resume and any other resources that showcase your work and experience (website, portfolio, work samples are all welcome). There’s no need to submit a cover letter, instead we ask for responses to a set of questions that get at how you think about the core components of this project.
