What would a typical day on the job be like? What work would I do? As an Electrician with the City of Newport News General Services Department, you’ll help keep city facilities operating safely and efficiently. Each day brings new challenges, restoring power to a recreation center after a storm, upgrading lighting in a public building, or installing new circuitry during renovations. Your work may begin with reviewing assignments, gathering tools, and troubleshooting electrical systems in offices, fire stations, or water facilities. You’ll test switchboards, repair circuits, and perform preventive maintenance that keeps lights on, HVAC systems running, and equipment reliable. When problems arise without blueprints, you’ll rely on your skill and sound judgment to diagnose and resolve issues quickly while following safety procedures. Some days focus on hands-on repairs; others involve documenting work, estimating materials, or coordinating with contractors and other city departments. Along the way, you’ll provide guidance to less experienced electricians and contribute to projects that serve the entire community. Starting as an Electrician Assistant, you’ll learn the fundamentals of wiring and safety. As you advance to Technician and beyond, you’ll handle complex installations and diagnostics. By the time you reach Master Electrician, you’ll lead projects and mentor others, ensuring Newport News remains powered, connected, and ready for whatever comes next.
