Position Title: Public Safety/Communications Intern - Paid
Department: Communications
Dates: Summer 2026: May 11, 2026 – July 31, 2026
Hours: Paid position, up to 29 hours per week
 

Essential Job Duties
Summary of Position:
The Intern will experience a professional environment in communications, public safety, and media relations, while working alongside the Public Safety Information Officer to assist with the dissemination of information to the public. 

This position is also responsible for shooting and editing videos related to public safety, assisting with social media planning and content creation and other special media related projects.
 

Essential job functions:
Assist in the distribution or delivery of marketing materials.
Provide logistical and on-site communications support for public safety outreach events, community meetings,emergency preparedness initiatives, and interagency functions.
Assist with creative concepts, shooting video, still photos, and editing.
Assist with social media planning and content creation.
Write competently in a variety of styles to communicate agendas, briefs, summaries for notifications and socialmedia.
Proofreading a variety of written communications.
Collect, catalog, and manage a secure media archive of photography and video assets related to public safety operations and community engagement.
Other responsibilities as assigned
 

Knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics
Educational background in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Emergency Management, Political Science, Public Administration, or a related field.
Knowledge and experience with MS Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suites and Photoshop.
Ability to establish/maintain effective working relationships with City employees and citizens.
Working knowledge of social media (Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, etc.)
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Ability to work collaboratively and independently while completing multiple projects in tandem.
 

Learning Goals
Gain knowledge of the City of Delray Beach, its public safety structure, operational processes, and strategic goals.
Understand the role of communications within public safety and how effective messaging contributes tocommunity trust, transparency, and public service.
Identify the different mediums used in community outreach and how it is used in the City of Delray Beach.
Identify how other mediums can be used in city government and explain how it could be applied at the City of Delray Beach.
 

Minimum Qualifications
Current college student or recent graduate majoring in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Public Safety, Political Science, Public Administration and or related field.
