Special Education Teacher

The special education teacher in the Vistas Program at KMS will have a caseload of students and will provide specially designed instruction for social skills, academic and executive functioning skill interventions. Students in the program have an educational code of Autism (Level 1) or Social Communication Disorder. The characteristics of students  served in the Vistas Program have difficulty with perspective-taking, managing transitions, initiating tasks, and regulating emotions when social demands increase. The special educator is the central point of contact for general education teachers, ensuring they understand the students' accommodations. They oversee paraprofessionals or aides who accompany these students to classes, providing social coaching and ensuring they are facilitating independence rather than "hovering". The Vistas room often serves as a sensory-friendly home base where students can decompress and "reset" before returning to the mainstream setting..

Qualifications

  • Certification: Must hold New Hampshire Teacher Certification in Special Education with Endorsement 1900.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree and/or advanced endorsements are preferred.

Experience: 

  • . Experience with the Social Thinking Curriculum would be valued as well as other social skill curriculum experience.
  • IEP development and progress reporting is required. Strong, effective parent communication is a must.
