Substitute Teacher

The Opportunity: You’re ready to take the lead. As a Substitute Teacher with Swing Education, you aren’t just "covering" a class, you're the instructional leader for the day. Whether you are exploring a career in education or seeking meaningful, resume building work post graduation, this role offers real world leadership experience entirely on your terms.

Why Swing is a Different Kind of Partner

We aren’t a staffing agency; we are your direct employer and a launchpad for your career journey. We’ve designed this role with your growth and autonomy in mind:

  • Total Schedule Control: Forget the traditional 9 to 5. Accept jobs via our app, text, or web. You pick the schools, days, and grade levels. Zero surprise early morning phone calls.
  • Leadership in Action: Step into the lead role. You will guide the class, execute prepared lesson plans, and set the tone for the learning environment.
  • Earn While You Learn: Don't have your teaching permit yet? No problem. You can start immediately in a support-based role (like a Paraprofessional) while you work toward leading a classroom.
  • We Help You Level Up (For Free): Through our Permit Assist program, we will guide you step by step through the process to earn your CA Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit, at no cost to you.

What You Need to Get Started in CA

California has specific guidelines for leading a classroom, but we make the pathways clear:

  • Option 1: The Degree Track (Bachelor’s Required)
    • You have your Bachelor’s degree (any major).
    • The Perk: You are eligible to apply now! You can begin working immediately in classroom support roles. To move into lead teaching roles, simply opt into Permit Assist and we’ll help you secure your Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit.
  • Option 2: The Undergrad Track
    • You are currently working toward your degree.
    • The Requirement: You must have completed at least 90 college credits AND currently hold the CA CL-505d Emergency Permit for Prospective Teachers.
  • Universal Requirements:
    • A willingness to pass a standard background check and TB test (we will guide you through the exact steps).
    • A responsible, empathetic mindset and a genuine commitment to student success.

A Day in the Life

As the primary adult in the room, you are the catalyst for a productive school day:

  • Instructional Delivery: Leading the classroom through the absent teacher's lesson plans with confidence and clarity.
  • Classroom Culture: Guiding student behavior, keeping the energy focused, and maintaining a positive, inclusive environment.
  • Independent Problem Solving: Adapting on the fly to ensure students have a seamless and supportive educational experience.
