Spanish Machine Translation Post-Editing Volunteer

The Machine Translation Post-Editing Volunteer (MTPE) volunteer will work closely with the Multicultural Communications Team to review and edit written materials translated from English into Spanish. This role is primarily focused on post-edition of machine translated content. The volunteer must be a subject-matter expert in proofreading and will be responsible for post-editing grammar, syntax, punctuation and terminology errors.

 

Job Description:

  • Proofread and correct post-edit machine-translated materials.
  • Ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency with original meaning and tone
  • Translate or proofread internal and external documents as needed, on an on-call basis.
  • Use computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools to ensure consistency and efficiency across projects.
  • Follow Red Cross translation style and terminology guidelines.
  • Adhere to third parties style guidelines (Royal Spanish).
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to accurately translate specialized content.
  • Incorporate feedback from reviewers and senior linguists into your translations to improve translation quality, fluency, naturality, and ensure consistency.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Major in linguistics, translation, language studies, Spanish philology, or interpretation (preferred). If from a different field, provide proof of equivalent education and experience (certification or portfolio required).
  • Native Spanish speaker with excellent English skills.
  • Proven experience translating from English to Spanish (portfolio recommended).
  • Strong proofreading and writing skills in both Spanish and English.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to spot grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation, and style errors.
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 (Word and Excel). Must have a phone, computer, and reliable internet.

 

Applicants must provide documented evidence of meeting at least one of the following criteria:

  • Major in linguistics, translation, language studies, Spanish philology, or interpretation (preferred)
  • Two years of full-time professional translation experience and an accredited higher education degree in a non-language-related discipline or at least five years of full-time professional translation experience.

 

Applicants must demonstrate the following competences:

  • Translation, linguistic and textual competence in both the source and target languages
  • Research and information acquisition, cultural, technical and domain competences 

 

To verify these competences, the interview process includes a practical evaluation consisting of three tasks:

  • Writing samples, Translation and Proofreading 
  • Each task is assessed using a standardized framework.

 

Additional Requirements:

  • Strong computer skills, including advanced knowledge and command of Microsoft Word.
  • Reliable access to resources needed to volunteer 100% virtually, including access to a computer, internet, and phone

  • Willingness to comply with current public health and American Red Cross policies.
