Public Communications Specialist

As a Public Communications Specialist, you will utilize a variety of tools and platforms to inform, engage, and inspire our community while supporting the City’s strategic communication goals.
Typical Tasks
- Develops liaison roles, both internally and externally, to expand and enhance the City’s communications efforts while supporting the overarching departmental goals of accurate, coordinated, and timely communication.
- Pitches topics for coverage to the Strategic Communications Division and assists with writing copy, creating graphics, and producing videos in appropriate formats for various City communications platforms.
- Attends and contributes to Editorial Board Meetings, City Communicator Meetings, and other related groups as assigned.
- Coordinates departmental input, prepares finished design, and distributes weekly newsletter(s) for internal audiences, in consultation with Strategic Communications Division teammates.
- Assists with video program production including coordinating and scheduling video shoots, operating and assisting with set-up of various equipment, and providing support to project leads to help get video projects through editing, quality control, and distribution.
- Assists the Digital Division by creating captions for videos and written alternative text for images and graphics to ensure content is accessible to users. Provides support with monitoring social media and track metrics.
- Manages the Department of Public Communication’s page on the City’s intranet platform.
- Participates in departmental emergency response activities as assigned, including potential assignments outside normal working hours (Alpha Status).
- Attends internal and external meetings as assigned, representing the department and providing advice to various individuals and/or groups on communications, video production, message development, and related topics.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Vocational/Educational Requirement: Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in public communications or a closely related field.
Experience: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this job class requires a minimum of one year of related, full-time equivalent experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards.
Special Requirements:Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
