Sustainable Energy Fellow

The Network for a Sustainable Tomorrow (NeST) is seeking a passionate, driven, and creative leader dedicated to promoting clean energy in the Southern Tier with an equity lens. Founded in 2008 as the Binghamton Regional Sustainability Coalition, NEST is a non-profit based in Binghamton that operates a variety of programs working towards social, environmental, and economic justice and equity in our region.

Our ideal candidate for a Sustainable Energy Fellow would have a background in clean energy and/or community outreach, and a strong desire to help increase access to clean energy, especially for those in marginalized communities. 
 

Terms

This is a hybrid, hourly position that starts in June of 2026, with no predetermined end date. The majority of hours worked will be remote. Most in-person work involved community events and meetings in Broome, Tioga, Chenango and Delaware Counties. Your own transportation is required. 

 

Rate: $25/hour, no fringe benefits. $180 monthly cell phone stipend. Raises and conversion to a full-time, exempt position are possible, depending on performance and available funding.
 

Hours: Flexible to accommodate school, although being a current student is not required. 35 hours per week during the summer and ~25 hours per week per Academic semester (Fall and/or Spring).   

 

Responsibilities

  1. Energy Corps Internship Supervisor (40%)
    1. Organize and facilitate weekly virtual meetings with 3-5 undergraduate and graduate interns, creating meeting agendas for each one.
    2. Review intern work products across a range of roles including marketing, event coordination, case management, fundraising, and web development.
    3. Devise projects and delegate tasks. (Once trained, interns support or carry out many of the tasks in this job description) 
    4. Pursue additional projects with community partners, coordinating intern support for each one.
    5. Each intern should continue and/or complete one Long-term Project per intern term
  2. Binghamton Community Power (BCP) & Clean Energy Programs Event Coordination (40%)
    1. Coordinate Binghamton Community Power, a program that uses education and capacity building to make clean energy upgrades, home energy efficiency improvements, and clean energy careers more accessible in disadvantaged communities across Binghamton.
      1. Facilitate biweekly BCP planning committee meetings and monthly Binghamton 2 Degrees Energy and Housing Working Group meetings, bringing together the perspectives of professionals from across the Binghamton metro area’s public sector.
      2. Coordinate with community partners to hold educational events and tabling sessions relating to program materials.
      3.  Implement a surveying and data collection process collecting information on the barriers community members face to making home electrification and weatherization improvements in their homes.
      4. Oversee quarterly BCP reporting responsibilities.
    2. Organize educational presentation events (in-person and virtual) for major NeST programs including Clean Energy Career Pathways, Check NYSEG, and HeatSmart Southern Tier, combining these whenever possible.
      1. Coordinate with dozens of community partners to host and promote events 
      2. Communicate clearly with potential clients during events, and via email, about our different programs. 
      3. Create informative and engaging ways to connect with a diverse group of audiences
    3. Oversee NeST’s general social media strategy (Facebook, Instagram)
  3. Administrative responsibilities for Staff (15%)
    1. Facilitate weekly Staff meetings
    2. Attend weekly fundraising meetings
    3. Maintain a weekly “To-Do’s” spreadsheet to inform both staff and interns about their weekly tasks 
  4. Installer partner coordination (5%)
    1. Act as liaison for any necessary communication
    2. Organize and facilitate monthly meetings

 

Necessary Qualifications/Experience:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a related field required
  • Excellent interpersonal skills (one-on-one and in a group format), written and oral communication skills
  • Experience in community-based outreach and education
  • Demonstrated leadership experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to environmentalism and economic and racial justice
  • Self-motivation, resourcefulness, and creativity
  • Experience in project management 
  • Ability to take initiative, self-manage and remain flexible
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team in a fast-paced work environment
  • Ability to manage multiple agendas and operate effectively
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with co-workers and allies
  • Cultural competency and proven ability to work in a culturally diverse environment
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as needed 
  • Competency with email, google suites, and other common computer programs

  • Experience organizing in communities not traditionally reached by environmentalists
  • Experience with and understanding of the greater Binghamton area
